Loved it lots April 12, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Everything about the movie made me want to get up and dance and sing with the people in this film. It feels like everyone on the movie was having a great time and brought their "A" game to this one and it really shows throughout. I'm not normally into this style of movie but i had no problem loving this one from beginning to end. While the movie runs at about 2 hours you won't really notice. I was so engrossed in this that i might just break down and get the soundtrack to it as well.
Also this edition has a 2nd disc with LOADS of features on everything about the movie process from the music to hair, makeup, dancing and just coming up with ideas to make this not a complete copy of the musical or the orignal Hairspray (Ricki Lake, Divine, Ruth Brown and others starred in that one). Its a movie that anyone and everyone in the family can watch nothing to worry about hiding the kids from except maybe the occasional kiss between different characters.
While everyone has fun in this one there's a deeper issue going on in this one and that's the racial prejudice that were evident during that time. With the Corny Collins show (hosted by James Marsden who can sing). Its probably better to just check it out if you haven't already seen the original it was and still is an issue in today's society. I thought it was important to have that in there and keep it true as its something that needed to be touched on even in an overall fun and enjoyable film like this.
Nikki Blonsky, Amanda Bynes, Queen Latifah, John Travolta, Christopher Walken, Michelle Pfeiffer, Brittany Snow, Zac Efron, James Marsden, Elijah Kelly (who all get their chance to shine both singing and dancing) round out an excellent and well acted movie and its worth every penny to purchase and partake in this great movie.
Hairspray the Musical April 11, 2008 Sad to say that as a B-more Native, I almost love this one more than the original, sorry John.
Missing "angel" April 10, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Not as good as expected. The star lacks"Angel", I mean making herself loved by the viewer. Some good songs. Travolta is a good actor, but this role could have been played perfectly by a woman. Nothing justifies otherwise. I know that as a Broadway Show this character was also played by a man. Why????

What's Not To Like? April 8, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Everything about this movie is wonderful. The acting, the singing, the songs, the message. It's hard to find a musical any longer that is worth watching but this one is a throwback to some of the great old musicals. It has the energy of a great musical like The Music Man and in my opinion is just as enjoyable to watch.
I started watching this with my wife not knowing what to expect but by the end of the movie we were both amazed at how well-done this movie actually was. From start to finish this is about as polished of a musical as you can find.
One more thing: I haven't enjoyed a lot of John Travolta's recent films. I haven't enjoyed too many of the roles he has been taking on. However, in this film he is totally perfect.
I'm already looking forward to watching it again and again.
