HAIRSPRAY 2007 October 4, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This DVD is a must-see for your collection! You will love everything about this movie just as much as I did. The music, the dancing, the storyline and the cast including John Travolta, Queen Latifah, James Marsden, Michelle Pfeiffer, Nikki Blonsky, Zac Efron, Elijah Kelley and Amanda Bynes make HAIRSPRAY the best movie of 2007!
Hollywood rubbish October 3, 2007 5 out of 62 found this review helpful
I really liked this film for the first 30 minutes or so until it turned preaching and demeaning. I hate it when hollyweird gets all preachy and moralistic and some of the songs I found quite sickening and, to be frank, racist. Whilst I understand that during that time the place was rife with racism, the songs were offensive to anyone of another race than the one's singing. Queen Latifah was so pretentious it made me feel ill to my stomach.
Of course, I have not seen the original or the musical so I'm sure the movie was just staying true to those but if I'd know beforehand I wouldn't have bothered with this.
John Travolta was pretty pathetic in this, it's so sad to watch his demise over the last few years after Pulp Fiction revised his career, and Amanda Bynes's role was a thankless and embarressing one. Christopher Walken needs to fire his manager cause this eccentric role he always get's stuck with is really boring and not indicative of his enormous talent.
I ended up walking out quite disgusted 40 minutes before the end and really didn't care enough about the story or characters to stick around and see how this dreck ended.
Save your dollars people. This movie's a stinker.
For all you plebs who will vote this "not helpful" you are just whingers, I'm allowed to express my opinion you know and by voting "not helpful" you are really just wasting your finger pressing time.
One of the must sees of the year!! September 29, 2007 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
This is one of the best movies of the year!! The entire cast is amazing. If you liked Rent, and Phantom of the Opera you must see this movie. You will be entertained from beginning to end. It has everything from moral views to just making you laugh out loud and dancing in your seat. Nikki Blonsky is a real find. Zach Efron is great, Michelle Pfeiffer is wicked and John Travolta is hysterical. Buy it and enjoy!!!
BEST MUSICAL MOVIE WITH THE PERFECT ACTORS September 28, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Amazing, great songs and great performances. Only two words: Michelle Pfeiffer!!!!! She's just awsome! Funny, evil, a really good singer. Queen Latifa WOW!! I lover her songs, her voice, so good. Travolta is the perfect one for that role, no one would have done better. I couldn't stop laughing, and he/she got me! Chris, Zac, Nikki and James were so good, I enjoyed so much every minute, every song, everything!! I've never thought I was going to love this movie so much. I saw it twice, and just after the movie ended, I ran to a store to buy the soundtrack. And I'm going to see it in a few days again. Can't wait to have the dvd, with all the extras!!!!!!
One of the best on-screen musicals in a long time. September 27, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I don't usually mind musicals turning into movies. When in the fact as film lover, I do like musicals. I don't mind some movies turning into musicals. Often, going to a musical is more expensive than going to the movie itself. But the last couple of musicals that I went to was "Edward Scissorhands" and "The Drowsy Chaperone." I now find that "The Grinch" and "Legally Blonde" are now into musicals. "Shrek" is going to be a musical, and they should make a "Happy Feet" musical.
But the new movie, "Hairspray" is a great movie to watch. I have never seen the musical before, but my parents have. But taken in fact, my mom took a friend, me, my sisters and her friend's daughter to see the movie, and we all thorougly enjoyed it. There was lots of music in the film, thorougly to enjoy the movie itself.
The movie tells the story of a young lady named Tracey Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) who wants to show Baltimore a thing or two. After school, she and a friend, Penny Pingelton (Amanda Bynes) like to watch a dance on TV. Although, Tracey soon has her dreams to become on the show. The movie also shows morals about segegration and how bad it is, because the in the 1960s, there was a lot of war going on such as the Vietnam War and the Civil War.
The music is great to this film. There are many songs, such as "Good Morning Baltimore," "Ladies Choice," "The Nicest Kids In Town," and especially Queen Latifah's "Big, Blonde and Beautiful." Now, I don't even know whether most of the actors like James Marden or actresses like Queen Latifah ever sing before. I forgot if I ever saw any of the celebrities sing, but with that said, their singing was very beautiful in the movie.
Another great thing you can expect from the movie is the cast members. Although, I can find Amanda Bynes very silly on her TV show and in most of her movies, she was very good in this one. In fact, this could be her best movie yet. Michelle Pfeiffer was perfect for her villainous role in the movie. Amanda Bynes, along with Queen Latifah, managed to pluck in their beautiful singing voice, turned out to be amazing. I actually never realized that John Travolta was dressed up as a girl in this movie, and if you do the same, you won't be bothered with it. At least, it didn't stop me too much. But something that turned down and made it to be really good was Zac Efron.
I thoroughly enjoyed "Hairpsray." And for that matter, I especially enjoyed it on the big screen. There were many surprises that turned out to be pretty good, and the movie had a great, deep message. I know my sisters love it, and they enjoy seeing musicals. And for that reasons, musicals are a whole lot calm in some ways like romantic comedies are.
Overall, "Hairspray" is definitely worth a shot. There's lots of good music and casting in this movie, so it'll definitely keep the fans entertained. You know, this should definitely be up for a few Academy Award nominations. I know that this movie will win a few.
