small misunderstanding on my part, seller fixed it anyway! November 2, 2008 i didnt realize the movie was coming without a case, i voiced my displeasure. the seller pointed out that i had overlooked it in the description and is sending me a new movie anyway!
One of my best collection November 2, 2008 It's a movie on faith in action. William Wilberforce was having trouble choosing whether to do the work of God or to be a political activist. "We humbly suggest that you could do both," was the recommendation from a lady who brought him a slave.
I hardly buy videos lately because I tend to lose them after awhile. However, I decided to buy this one after watching it from a rental. This film needs to be watched over and over again to inspire myself, my wife, my children, even my friends to put faith in action in our time.
Others have written great reviews about how well this movie was made; so I won't repeat.
I just want to highlight the life changing message of a real life story of William Wilberforce and his mentor John Newton. It is a story of someone who took on something impossible and without personal reward. A true story like this is more powerful than fictional stories, like the Batman movies, no matter how powerfully they are made.
This movie should not be watched just for entertainment, but an inspiration to take on the evil forces of our time. Slavery still exists in many parts of the world. Check out www.stopthetraffik.org.
Pitt, Wilberforce's friend who decided to run for Prime Minister, said it well, "We are too young to realize that certain things are impossible so we will do them anyway." If you are an old man (or woman) with wisdom and life experience, be like Newton in inspiring young people around you to change the world. If you are a young man (or woman), find a mentor to guide you to accomplish something for humanity that he (or she) didn't have the chance to accomplish.
Like Wilberforce who tried to chose either faith or work, God or social action, too many Christians today compartmentalize their lives between the two. We should not! I hope this movie encourages people to fulfill God's purpose for their lives.
moving content October 29, 2008 Great movie with moving content. The music throughout the movie was stirring and emotional. William is portrayed as having a deep passion for ending slavery at any cost. It consumes his being. It is a drive he cannot ignore and he dedicates his life to it, ultimately sacrificing his own will for his life to fulfill God's purpose. This is a great movie for older kids to see. Although not young children, due to the themeatic elements and a few visual scenes that may be disturbing. Also, the content is too mature for young kids to understand or follow what is going on. I also enjoyed the music video bonus.
Moving and Thought Provoking October 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I knew of this movie's existence long before I ever saw it and I wish now I had seen it sooner. What a wonderful telling of not only the man who took on the British Parliament to abolish the slave trade, but William Wilberforce was the founder of what we today know as the SPCA. Wilberforce had so much compassion for both humans and animals and led a hard won crusade in their interest. I found the moving disturbing at times and definitely needed a tissue by the end. I think everyone should see this movie. It matters not that it's a bit of English history. It's history that affects us all and it regards matters that continue to be relevant in today's society.
Exquisitely done about a vitally important subject October 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This film is relevant and timeless. It's about a giant of a man, a Christian dedicated to abolishing the English slave trade, and it paints a beautiful and moving portrait of this man, William Wilberforce, played marvelously by Ioan Gruffudd. Rufus Sewell is also outstanding as his friend, Clarkson, and Albert Finney is unforgettable as the former slave ship captain who wrote the hymn "Amazing Grace." This is the sort of film that can be shown to high schools and college classes, to families, to church groups, to any and all who want to know the story of all that Wilberforce endured politically and personally for his beliefs. It is exquisitely directed by Michael Apted and every performance is terrific, not just the few I've named. The portrait of William Pitt in this film, England's youngest prime minister, is deeply affecting, and the film takes on even greater power when we realize that slavery in many forms still exists today. This is a film that makes us ask "Are we doing enough?" on every level? Are we doing enough to bring out the best in ourselves and in others, and for the greater good? Highly recommended.
