No violence. Very New York. Fun at the end December 26, 2007 The film is a lot of fun and very enjoyable. You jump up off the couch.
Mad Hot Ballroom December 12, 2007 I purchased this on the recommendation of a friend. I enjoy dance films but was skeptical about this one with children. It carries you along with all the young students. It is tasteful and at the end you are cheering. Nicely put together to make an interesting story.
Dance Lovers Delight December 10, 2007 If you like "Dancing with the Stars" you'll love this real life dance contest between students in New York City. You'll enjoy every minute. A school teacher's must.
Mad Hot Ballroom July 23, 2007 There's enough sizzle in this wonderful doc to power hundreds of preteen dance lessons, especially as the kids Agrela features--Dominican and Italian, uptowners and outer-borough residents--come from many walks of life. Aside from seeing these youths develop into fancy, sophisticated hoofers, one great charm of the film is hearing the budding dancers talk about their lives, aspirations, and (of course!) the opposite sex. With a leg up on rousing, uplifting entertainment, "Mad Hot Ballroom" makes "American Idol" look like vacuous child's play.
going for the gold April 28, 2007 this documentary is great until the halfway point. then it sort of turns into 'rocky' for preteen ballroom students.
but getting to this eventual point is filled with joys and heartbreaks. as a teacher, i can't watch the middle section. i just want to cry too. it's not so much because of the loss, but it's because of the accomplishment as well. this documentary is very much about the students' but you can't miss the folks that teach them something that requires extra time and preparation. they have fun, but they also feel their dreams of glamour and success revive as well. and the many forms that takes, from emotional tearbreaks to momma rose-like grit, are very real and equally powerful.
