4 out of 5 stars Tasteful laughs for guys and girls   January 11, 2008

If you need a good laugh at the end of a hard week, this is the film for you! Hitch is a remarkable combination of humor and sensitivity, enjoyable for both men and women. I have never seen my husband laugh harder than in this movie!

Alex Hitchins is a private, secretive consultant who helps timid or awkward men find the courage and grace to meet and court the women they've been longing to know. Hitch is challenged when an accountant hires him in order to get to know a millionaire celebrity. But it turns out that Hitch's biggest challenge is letting down his own barriers when he himself falls in love.

There are many moments of male/female humor in Hitch, poking fun at the different ways we communicate and understand. There is also good old slapstick and laughing at our own human foibles and weaknesses. Thankfully the humor is clean, even though the movie has its share of sexual innuendo and God's name misused. If you're sensitive about innuendo and language, this movie might bother you a bit. But I was really impressed by the emphasis on honorable, respectful behavior in Hitch.

For example, the mission of Alex Hitchins is expressly not sexual. When one potential client admits that he just wants to "bang" the girl he likes, Hitch goes through the roof. His job is to help people have the time to talk and listen to each other, growing in passion because of common interests. He has no sympathy for sleazy men who only want their own "needs" met. He refuses to work with this customer.

Also there are moments when Alex himself could have compromised his ideals for his own gratification, but instead pursued friendship. Throughout the story, he is shown to be mature and concerned about who women really are.

Hitch is not just a fairy tale movie. Hitch discovers the difficulty that past betrayal causes in present relationships. He is confronted with the choice between loving and risking, and staying "safe" but never loving. Friends of his are willing to speak candidly with him, challenging his assumptions about love and life.

I highly recommend this movie as one of my top romantic comedies, finding the innuendoes and language the only major drawbacks.

4 out of 5 stars Painfully funny romantic comedy   January 8, 2008

Will Smith plays a "Date Doctor" who specializes in creating an opportunity for men to meet women of their dreams, for the long-term relationship. Hitch played by Smith was once scourned as a college student and set up his current occupation. He is very successful until one day he meets someone that he is interested in for the longer-term relationship and his current client help him see that love is worth everything.

There are painful moments, there are hysterical moments, and in the end, it is a very good movie to watch and own. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Nicely done romantic comedy   January 3, 2008

Alex "Hitch" Hitchens (Will Smith) is the "date doctor" who helps men get to first base with the woman of their dreams. He isn't a sleaze who teaches them to lie and con their way forward, he helps build their confidence and form a plan so they don't look like fools. His latest challenge is Albert (Kevin James), a portly tax accountant who lusts after a glamorous heiress. While Hitch is coaching Albert in the toughest assignment of his career, he also pursues a reporter for a New York tabloid. As one might expect in a romantic comedy, misunderstandings ensue and both Hitch and Albert will have to struggle if they want to capture true love.

Will Smith is one of the most likeable personas around and he exudes his usual easy charm here. The ethics of his profession had the potential to get dicey, but it's made very clear that he doesn't help guys score, he helps men looking for love. Just as most shrinks seem to be emotionally damaged, so too the love doctor is suffering the long-term effects of a broken heart. Hitch is charming and witty with a woman but letting her inside is a bit too scary. Albert is the opposite, of course. A big teddy bear who would declare his love for the heiress before she knew his name (with disastrous results) if he didn't have Hitch to advise him. The training sessions with the two of them are probably the most enjoyable of the whole movie and certainly enjoyable.

If there was a downside to the movie, it was the character of Sara, Hitch's love interest. She is so judgmental and shrill that I found myself wishing that Hitch would find someone a lot more pleasant to pursue. Alas, the poor man was smitten and so can look forward to continued verbal maulings for quite some time.

This is an easy movie to watch and an easy movie to like. Hitch is funny, entertaining, and has a good-hearted feel. Will Smith is as good as expected, but Kevin James plays a critical role in providing warmth and vulnerability in a movie that could otherwise have come off as slick and cynical.
