5 out of 5 stars Post 007 Connery as a Berber guerilla   February 18, 2008
Roughly based on an actual historical incident:

An American ambassador, Perdicaris, was kidnapped by Berber rebels in Morocco. Their leader, the Raisuli, sent a message to President Theodore Roosevelt, demanding a supply of rifles and ammunition in exchange for Perdicaris. Teddy's response? "Perdicaris alive, or Raisuli dead. Some mandatory gunboat diplomacy followed, and it is portrayed quite triumphantly in this film.

Aside from being quite a riveting, swashbuckling tale, one scene in particular stands out. A company of U.S. Marines with supporting Naval machinegun-teams go ashore, to show the Morroccans that America means business!

At the turn of the century, Morrocco was repeatedly occupied by a number of European powers jockeying for strategic position. France and Spain were the most notable presence.

In this film, Sean Connery plays a charismatic Berber guerilla leader, who kidnaps an American woman and her two children for ransom. He soon discovers that his captives are a bit more resourceful than expected. The captive family, in turn find themselves quite charmed with their captor's chivalric hospitality. Thus begins a cross-country adventure as multi-national military forces hunt for the Raisuli and his "guests".

5 out of 5 stars The Wind and the Lion   January 29, 2008
One of the overlooked action/adventure movies. Good cast, with a scenic backdrop of the Arabian desert. Good story line that shifts between America and Arabia. Sean Connery and Brian Keith play two men of strength and character leading their respective peoples. All in all a fun movie to sit and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars One of My Fave Movies of All Time   January 26, 2008
There's so much to love about this movie, especially if you're a Sean Connery fan. The character of Raisuli is full of admirable characteristics (given that he's a Barbary Pirate, though) and the clever repartie between he and Candace Bergen is laced thoughout the entire movie. Watching Bergen's opinion of Connery morph from beginning to end is another dimension. Add to that the way her children (especially her son) dreams of his experience and the final scene with Connery on the horse grabbing the rifle from the boy, and you've got the stuff legends are made of!

4 out of 5 stars "Perdicaris Alive or Raisuli Dead"   December 12, 2007
Having seen this movie many times at different stages of my life, it has never disappointed. The acting is sublime on so many levels and makes a rather talky movie engaging nonetheless. Fun Fact: Brian Keith, who plays Teddy Roosevelt later appeared as President William McKinley in Milius' 1997 "Rough Riders" which works as a prequel of sorts TW&TL with Tom Berenger playing the role of TR.
Everyone seems to have a favorite part of this movie and for me, it's when the US Marine detachment hustles through the streets of Tangier and crash through the Bashaw's palace guard. The set up is ridiculous and overblown, but over the top fun nonetheless.
The movie has some annoying "Hollywoodisms", particularly the oft used American "Super Soldier" scene that occurs when the small band of marines manages to defeat the much larger group of Germans, easily the most disciplined army on the planet at that time. But hey, this is Milius, the man who had a bunch of teenagers basically defeat a Red Army battalion in "Red Dawn" so I just take this into account and go with the flow. ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Must See Sean Connery Film!@!@!   November 29, 2007
The films is loosely based upon the famous Greek/American family Pedicaris. In reality, Ion Pedicaris was taken without much of an incident by the Raizuli for ransom. The Raisuli and Ion became great friends.
On May 18, 1904, Perdicaris and Ellen's son Cromwell were kidnapped from their home by the bandit band of Mulai Ahmed er Raisuli. Several of the Perdicaris's servants were injured by Raisuli's men, and Ellen was left behind alone. Shortly after leaving Tangier, Perdicaris broke his leg in a horse fall. Raisuli demanded of Sultan Abdelaziz of Morocco, $70,000 ransom, safe conduct, and control of part of Morocco.

Despite the circumstances, Perdicaris came to admire Raisuli and the two became friends. Raisuli assured his captive that no harm would befall him, and that he would protected by Raisuli if he came into harm's way. He came to sympathize with his captor, saying: "I go so far as to say that I do not regret having been his prisoner for some time...He is not a bandit, not a murderer, but a patriot forced into acts of brigandage to save his native soil and his people from the yoke of tyranny." [1]

U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt was angered by the kidnapping, and felt obliged to react and his Secretary of State, John Hay, described the demands as "preposterous". At the urging of Hay and the Counsel-General of Tangier, Samuel R. Gummere, Roosevelt dispatched seven battleships and several Marine companies, under the command of Admiral French Ensor Chadwick, though with little idea of what U.S. forces could achieve on such hostile foreign soil. They were not to be used without express orders from Washington; the only plan for using them was to seize the custom-houses of Morocco, which supplied much of its revenue, if the Moroccan government did not fulfill the demands of the United States: to make the concessions necessary to persuade Raisuli to release Perdicaris, and to attack Raisuli if Perdicaris were killed anyway.[2]

Roosevelt's resolve weakened still further when he was advised on June 1 that Perdicaris was not a U.S. citizen, in fact he had forfeited his American passport for a Greek one many years earlier; but Roosevelt reasoned that since Raisuli thought Perdicaris was an American citizen, it made little difference. Roosevelt tried to get Britain and France to join the U.S. in a combined military action to rescue Perdicaris, but the two countries refused. Instead, the two powers were covertly recruited to put pressure on the Sultan to accept Raisuli's demands which he agreed to do on June 21. Hay saw the need to maintain face so he issued a statement to the Republican National Convention:

"This government wants Perdicaris alive or Raisuli dead."
According to all witnesses, the Convention, which had been lukewarm towards Roosevelt up until then, went wild at this remark. One Kansas delegate exclaimed, "Roosevelt and Hay know what they're doing. Our people like courage. We'll stand for anything those men do." [3] This famous catchphrase quickly caught on, and helped Roosevelt secure his re-election.

Perdicaris and Varley were met personally by Gummere and Chadwick, who had spent much of the time of their capture with Perdicaris's wife. When Ellen Varley asked for the Admiral to provide a doctor for her husband, every medical officer in the American fleet volunteered.

The true facts of the incident remained secret until 1933.

The film is fabulous and gives you a genuine insight into the minds of Berbers and Arabs. The music, filmography, etc will fill you with emotion and awe. Please watch and enjoy one of Sean's best films in his entire career.
