An all time favorite... January 24, 2008 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Great title. I leave the long reviews to the pros. Either they good and nice folks, or work for the publisher! Omar Sharif and the others were great. One last thing, whys is Hollywood always mean to the Arabs and their image? If Arabs were really like they are portrayed in Movies, which they are not, I would have hated them!
Has Hollywood been fair in producing so many "Good" Arab characters, as opposed to the so few "Bad" Arab characters? Anthony Quinn is great, they love him in the Middle East and adore Omar Sharif!
Genius Insight January 18, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
The exploits of T.E. Lawrence are of utmost importance in today's world. This movie, based on Lawrence's "Revolt in the Desert", is the greatest insight into the motives behind the discontent of the Arabs in today's middle east. David Lean has made several award winning movies, and "Lawrence of Arabia" is one of his true masterpieces.
A classic! December 11, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Not much more needs to be said - 5 stars and the title of this review says it all. This is a movie I have seen numerous times since I was a young child and am thrilled to have it in my DVD collection!
Spectacualr landscape + Superb acting by Peter O'toole, Omar Sheriff and Anthony Quinn = Timeless Drama December 8, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a timeless drama because of spectacualr landscape and superb acting by Peter O'toole, Omar Sharif and Anthony Quinn. It portrays people psychology and the dirty politics. It showed how Lawrence changed from a peace-loving to a blood-thirsty person. It revealed how some people lied and betrayed anybody just to get what they wanted.
The action scenes are not as intense and realistic as today movies but this is not a big deal.
I've watched it twice.
An epic December 7, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
A sweeping look at a man who was made by the Great War.
Lawrence, a scholar and archeologist prior to the war (something the movie seems to miss) was sent by the British to assist the Arabs who were at that time revolting against their Ottoman masters. The British hoped that an Arab revolt would draw resources away from the Egyptian frontier and from Mesopotamia, allowing the allies to invade the Turkish homeland.
Lawrence, working with Prince Faisal, did manage to organize the Arabs after a fashion to attack the Turks but the Arabs were using the British as much as the British were using the Arabs. The difference was that the British had much more far-reaching goals for the region.
The movie is a great action film but not necessarily great history. But it is a winderful movie to sit down and watch. Lawrence was successful because he took up the Arab cause as his own. His exploits also served Allied propaganda at a time when everything was stalled on the Western Front.
As an aside, Lawrence could not live with being the hero portrayed by the Allies. He tried to get away from the person everyone thought he was.
