A fine tribute to forgotten heroes October 1, 2004 32 out of 36 found this review helpful
For a tv movie, this was really gripping. The cast, which includes Hank Azaria, Leelee Sobieski, David Schwimmer, Jon Voight, Donald Sutherland, & Cary Elwes, is outstanding, especially Hank Azaria & David Schwimmer who are usually in comedic roles. It would be impossible for a 3-hour miniseries to cover the Uprising in depth, but this does a great job of portraying the ZOB (Jewish Fighting Organization) leaders of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, Mordechai Anielewicz (leader of the ZOB) & Yitzhak Zuckerman (ZOB second-in-command). Also you see the brutal tactics of General Jurgen Stroop, SS commander of the Warsaw Ghetto operation. The battle scenes are nicely done & there are two scenes in particular that need mentioning: the scene with the German troops marching into the Ghetto & singing is entirely accurate (Later, however, the German troops would not be so cocky!). Also, the scene where a Jewish fighter ignites a hidden bomb killing many German troops is entirely accurate. That bomb was responsible for nearly 100 dead Germans! There are many excellent books that have been written about this Uprising, & I recommend "The Bravest Battle" by Dan Kurzman (-excellent book!)& "Kazik: Memoirs of a Warsaw Ghetto Fighter" by Kazik (Simha Rotem). Kazik is one of the main characters in the movie "Uprising" & so this book is perfect for those who want to learn more after seeing the wonderful movie. The special edition dvd is great, with informative documentaries on the real Uprising & the making of the film. There are two different commentaries where you can here the director or the actors discuss the movie in depth. This dvd is a must-have for all World War Two buffs!
This is a 'dirty dozen' equivalent August 13, 2004 15 out of 49 found this review helpful
Whatever the resistance, this movie undermines any plausibility behind it. German SS soldiers scattering to their death like a James Bond movie and heroes weilding weapons like they belong in a Dirty Dozen sequel. Its plain childish. The holocaust was certainly one of the worst atrocities.... it would have been nice to think... maybe even wish... their was this kind of resistance... but in truth... it came no where near the intensity or glory that this movie portrayed. Its interesting to note that the Polish played such a insignificant role in this depiction... when in fact... they were equally involved.
We all know that a large Jewish community share the royalties in Hollywood. I have no problem with that, but dont insult my intelligence with these propaganda messages... the closing credits - "We must continue to defend the jewish fate in the future and unite in jerusalem" blah blah blah jee I wonder if that empowering message has subtle links to current middle east politics.
No doubt a jewish community within Amazon will hotly protest my review. I have nothing aginst jews but this movie has a hidden agenda... which I think is unfair.
A good movie - and read MILA 18 July 14, 2004 7 out of 12 found this review helpful
This is a very good TELEVISION movie. We can not forget that it was made for TV. A good companion for this movie it would be to read "MILA 18", by Leon Uris.It is s solid movie. Of course, when someone talks about the Holocaust, the person is prone to receive a lot of backlash and/or praise. Jan Avnet tried his best, chose good actors (who gave solid performances) to tell this tale of heroism. It's a highly recommended TV movie, that's for sure.
Great except for anti- Polish sentiments June 22, 2004 4 out of 10 found this review helpful
I noticed another reviewer picked up on some of the historical inaccuracies of the film, please no "sins of omission",there was a Polish underground that eagerly fought alongside the Jews in Warsaw. There is no need to over-dramatise this part of history as it is painfully dramatic enough,I'm not of Polish descent but would be offended if I were, otherwise a captivating & well made film.Would've gotten 5 stars if not for deliberate over dramatization of certain scenes & glaring non-mention of the Polish underground which fought equally brave against the Waffen SS & Wermacht units.Check out "Warsaw Rising",if you can find a copy,Ballantine Books, for a historically accurate perspective on this subject.
A diamond flawed -- but only slightly. June 20, 2004 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
A useful education for those people who are largely unaware of the gross inhumanity of the Nazi German state. The Jewish Ghetto Uprising of April 1943 was followed just over a year later by the general Warsaw Uprising of August 1944; incredibly, some of the Ghetto survivors took part in that too. The later event was hinted at in the historically-accurate scene which showed the Polish national flag flying from a rooftop alongside the Jewish Star of David flag. This was a deliberate decision by the leadership of the Uprising, who were largely members of Left Zionist youth organizations such as Hashomer Hatzair who believed that the fight against Nazi Germany was a common cause for Jewish and non-Jewish Poles. Some production details were bothersome. The German villains tended to speak English with heavy accents, while the others did not. But since the original languages were Polish and German, and probably some Yiddish, maybe this problem is not so serious!
