5 out of 5 stars Very Moving ,and Great acting!   December 15, 2006
I just saw this on DVD,after never catching it on television. I thought it was a very touching film, and was very pleased with the quality of the actor's performances. It always saddens me to be reminded how so many countries failed to act in ways that could have saved so many lives, such as if they had bombed the railroads and bridges leading to the death camps. Very engrossing film,I was pleased with it.

3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag   September 12, 2006

The story of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising is riveting in and of itself, and the director, Jon Avnet, couldn't ruin it entirely with his casting choices and historical inaccuracies, but it's a close thing.

First off, the accents here are atrocious. Not a single actor does the Polish/Yiddish accent well, but the German accents are terrible too. I'm not sure why no Polish or Germans were cast, but the speech here is very distracting. If you can't do it right, don't do it at all.

Of the main cast only LeeLee Sobieski and Stephen Moyer have any presence. David Schwimmer is entirely out of his league. He should stick to comedy. His hangdog face is perhaps suitable in the ghetto setting, but you still just want to smack it. Hank Azaria is far too old to be playing Mordechai Anielewicz. Donald Sutherland seems utterly non-Jewish (why do they have him bearded when Adam Czerniakov was clean shaven?), and Jon Voight fails to be convincing as a German.

It's also clear that Avnet has an agenda with regard to the Poles. Not a single Pole in this movie, outside of the Jewish Poles, is likable. The Polish civilians taunt or blackmail the Jews and the Polish Home Army turns its back on the ghetto in its hour of greatest need. Also, in the interviews and commentary the claim is made that the Jewish ghetto resistence held out longer against the Germans than the country of Poland did as a whole which is factually untrue and misleading as well. Poland was antisemitic, but there were Poles that
did help despite the great risks they ran. The Polish Home Army WAS involved in supplying arms to the Jews and did offer assistance. Poles were seen as sub-human as well and had no bargaining power with their occupiers, and Poland as a country suffered terribly under the Nazis. Finally, there were plenty of unscrupulous Jews on the interior side of the ghetto wall, but very little mention of this is made. The message: Jews, good; Poles, bad.

What is good here is the action when it finally comes. Uprising is well filmed and when the Jews finally face off against their
tormentors, it's emotionally powerful stuff. Unfortunately, there is some inaccurate stuff here as well including some scenes in which, prior to the uprising itself, Jews take out groups of Nazis and then steal their weapons.

This is probably worth a watch, but I wouldn't spend money to do it.

3 out of 5 stars Good representation of the ghetto life yet incomplete of the fighting   June 21, 2006

I recently finished reading Conversations with Executioner which is Jurgen Stroop's account of what happened in the ghetto. The first half of the movie very well shows the living conditions in the ghetto and the brutality of the germans. Also the building of the wall around the ghetto and ways to sneak out were very realistic. Donald Suterland's acting is great, and he very well portrais the role of head of jewish council. Hank Azaria's acting was wonderful he really brought the character of Mordechai Anielewicz to life and in contrast David Schwimmer's performace was posibly worst I seen of him so far, he looked the part but with hard to place accent which faded in and out and lack of realism he should have been replaced with someone else. The movie takes a turn for the worse in the second half when the actual uprising starts. I was surprised that there was very little mention of the Polish Underground Army which has helped the jews in the ghetto in many ways from supplying weapons to supplying food and building materials for the bunkers. Overall the entire fighting seemed too claen and too orderly. There are repeated scenes and unrealistic scenes of battle. Also in his report and his confessions in prison Stroop never mentioned using gas in the ghetto. Most german attacks are shown as disorganized and chaotic, they were like that before Stroop took over the command, at which point he had very well organized attacks especially with flame throwers and large caliber anti-aircraft guns. Also at the time in Poland from a builders stand point houses were built out of red brick some from concrete and all had red clay shingles roofing, during the fighting you can see that the houses which are being destroyed are made from wood and drywall and roofs are covered in modern asphalt shingles. All those small details build up and take away from the big picture.
In conclusion this is a good movie however Andrzej Wajda made a better one. I suggest seeing both.

5 out of 5 stars Some fought back   May 2, 2006

This is the tragic story of the Warsaw ghetto as it was slowly consumed by the nazi murder machine one deportation at a time.

Trainload by trainload the population was deported to the death camps until the remaining few decided that if their suffering was to end it would be as free human beings than as animals to be slaughtered. This is the story of their heroic last stand.

Graphic and well portrayed.

5 out of 5 stars "Can a moral man maintain his moral code in an immoral world?"   January 31, 2006

"Uprising" tells the true story of the unprecedentedly active resistance of an organized underground movement of Polish Jews in the Warsaw ghetto against the extermination of its inhabitants by the German occupying forces in 1943. In this context the question arises whether a moral man can maintain his moral code in an immoral world. This ambitious but somewhat americanized film tries to document the essay of this group of people to find a possible answer to this question. In this context, Mordechai, dedicatedly played by Hank Azaria, explains: "We are determined to preserve one choice - how we die. The spirit of our deaths will shape the soul of a new generation." One of the artistic highlights of this film is the expressive and lively performance of Stephen Moyer as Kasik. Further starring Leelee Sobieski, David Schwimmer, Jon Voight and Donald Sutherland.
