4 out of 5 stars Jewish persecution   March 9, 2007
3 out of 4 found this review helpful

This miniseries shows part of the Jewish persecution, the suffering and the anguish that inocent people have to face because of their believes, just because one leader happened to think differently. The performances of the cast were great, I specially loved Stephen Moyer's performance. Another great surprise was seeing Luke Mabley on it too. Of course Leelee Sobieski, Donald Sutherland, Hank Azaria and so many others had excelent performances.

5 out of 5 stars In the darkest of times, hope, faith & courage live on!   March 2, 2007

I have watched numerous movies about the Holocaust, and read tons of books on the subject, and this movie ranks on top of my list as one of the all-time best dealing with the Holocaust. It boasts an excellent cast...Hank Azaria does a great job portraying the Jewish resistance leader, Lee Lee Sobieski as the courageous heroine who risks all to fight the Nazis, Jon Voight as the merciless Nazi oppressor...the cast is marvelous, and the scenes absolutely heartwrenching. I loved that in this movie, we see that the Jews did not all go to their slaughter without fighting back, there were Jewish groups that did retaliate against Nazi oppression. The Warsaw Ghetto uprising remains one of the greatest stories of courage against oppression, of faith in the face of monstrous evil, of hope in the bleakest of times, and above all of the resilience of the human spirit...watch it, & do not ever forget.

4 out of 5 stars Good historical action.   February 7, 2007

Chances are if you are looking up this movie it's because you saw it when it first aired on television (that's why I bought it). I believe that many aspects of this movie were based on accurate historical information. The action and drama is very good in my opinion. If you like movies that depict the underdog (in this case Polish Jews) defeating the oppressor (the vile Nazis) then give this one a shot.

4 out of 5 stars can a moral man maintain his morals in an immoral age?   January 22, 2007

Tells the story of the Nazi oppression of the Jews in the Ghetto of Warshaw and the Jews rebellion. The film starts in 1939 with the growing list of prohibitions and regulations leading to the virtual imprisonment of half-a-million Polish Jews in an old district of Warsaw. Their daily struggle against hunger and disease is made worse when the Nazis start their deportations. Under the guidance of a few men, members of the community decide that if they have to die they will only do so fighting-they will not die passively. So they build shelters and bunkers in the basements and cellars of buildings, often with tunnels that lead to other buildings; they collect arms and ammunition for battle; and they fight the Germans. It is an important story for people to know; the acting itself is okay. One question that repeatedly comes up is "can a moral man maintain his morals in an immoral age (or at an immoral time)?" Some of the most sickening scenes are those that show horrible propoganda films. I guess the reason I like the story is because I have always been horrified and sickened by the Holocaust and I get some gratification watching these people take on their evil oppressors. I don't want to spoil the end but there are a couple of success stories told at the end. Ultimately, the movie itself is okay but everyone should know the history of this resistance movement and how this small group of Jews were able to succeed against their much bigger oppressor and enemy.
