5 out of 5 stars Just great   August 26, 2008
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Sticks close to the book.

5 out of 5 stars Best one yet   August 16, 2008
See this one; this Wentworth-Anne match is the best.

My favorite is Amanda Root; she's brilliant here. She captures Anne's patience and gentle forbearance, but what I love most is how her eyes shine when she's happy. It's in keeping with Anne - quiet, demure - but it shows Anne's own strength. Even movie stills manage to capture that light in her eyes - I don't know how Root did it, but it was fantastic. Root's performance matches the ever-excellent Ciaran Hinds, and that's not an easy task; I had a hard time watching Hinds' "Jane Eyre" (opposite Samantha Morton's Jane) because they didn't seem well matched to me.

Those two alone make this Persuasion the one to see.

I don't consider it perfect: I preferred the 2007's Benwick and Lady Russell and the 1971 miniseries' length (the 1971 isn't bad at all). Minor, though.

5 out of 5 stars A Tender, Romantic Jane Austen Movie   August 11, 2008
This is a tender movie and wonderfully done. It is simple and does not have the famous actors as in other Jane Austen films, but you will be a fan nonetheless. The subtle glances and movements have you on the edge of your seat. It is a slow moving film but I think this is an asset to the film as it all flows nicely and plays enough with your heart that you are waiting for what happens at the end. I do recommend have english subtitles on during the parts you can not hear exactly what is being said. I needed this at the end when the last note is read. I highly recommend this film.

5 out of 5 stars A charming story!   August 8, 2008

Persuasion is a wonderful story. Who hasn't wanted to go back and rekindle a romance that was prematurely cut short by the wrong advice of friends? This is an excellent verion of Persuasion. The actors are well cast and very likeable. Your heart breaks for Anne who listened to bad advice and did not make her own choice in love and marry Wentworth the first time he proposed. It just shows you that you cannot take advice that is so contrary to what your heart and mind tells you - even from family. It is a charming story that pulls you in as the acting is very well done and the story line is well adapted to this film version. It is a very charming story to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!   August 5, 2008

I bought this version of "Persuasion" because of A. Casalino's glowing review and am very glad I did. I also have the Masterpiece Theatre version as well and like it too, but this film is a must for anyone who loves Jane Austen, her novels, and her unforgettable, vibrant characters. Amanda Root epitomizes Anne Elliot in every way: appearance, way of speaking, facial expressions, humility, even in her walk. Buying this DVD just for Root's Anne Elliot is well worth the money; however, Ciaran Hinds' performance as Wentworth is right up there too. Kudos to the actress who portrays his sister, Mrs. Sophy Crofts, and to the actor who plays husband, Admiral Croft. It is as though Austen's characters have stepped right out of the novel and onto the screen. For example, Colin Redgrave's turn as Sir Walter Elliot is priceless! His flagrant self-absorption, narcissism, and puffed-up ego are most amusing at first and inevitably direct the viewer's thoughts to the origins and continuation of Anne's self-effacement.

And the final scenes between Anne and Wentworth - magnificently done!
