Superb DVD transfer of a movie that stands the test of time May 6, 1999 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Mister Roberts on DVD is high quality and worth the price. When I view this movie on Cable TV -- TNT or TMC, it's the old matted version that has poor color and grainy images. The DVD is in it's original theatrical format -- the images are razor sharp, the color is splendid and the sound is crisp and clear. Plenty of special features too!Of Course the story of a "Citizen Soldier" Rear Echelon Naval Officer wanting to get into the action of the great WW-II before it ends is what this DVD is all about. Director John Ford and Mervyn Leroy capture the boredom, tedium, quarrrels, and at the end the tragedy of the heroes who were unseen and unsung during WW-II. A great ensemble cast with many actors from the John Ford Stock Company(Ward Bond, Ken Curtis).
Classy presentation of a classic film. January 16, 1999 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Warners has given us a beautiful widescreen transfer of "Mister Roberts." I did notice a couple of very small video "hitches" within the first few minutes of the film, but perfect play after that. This remains a thoroughly entertaining and moving film after all these years, and that's no surprise given the stellar cast. The supplemental material is first rate, including Henry Fonda, James Cagney and Jack Lemmon recreating scenes from the film live on stage on the Ed Sullivan program. It gives a taste of what the Broadway play must have been like.
Great cast, timeless story, Jack Lemon's great break December 8, 1998 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This film is a new experience every time I see it. James Cagny, Henry Fonda and Jack Lemon with the rest of the great supporting cast prove their superb talent in comedy. An amzazing aspect is that the acting isn't stilted or forced as are some other films of that era. It is really a treat to see real pros do an outstanding job. The story survives the test of time.
