Walt Disney had originally toyed with the idea of bringing Lewis Carroll's phantasmagorical classic to the screen in the '30s as one of his first live-action feature films. Paramount beat him to the punch with their 1933 all-star version, but, through patience or sheer stubbornness, Disney finally prevailed, turning the story into one of his studio's string of postwar animated classics. Though somewhat odd by most film musical standards (the songs are sometimes fragmentary and tend to punctuate the story rather than stop it to showcase themselves), the score utilizes Oliver Wallace's playful underscore and no less than eight songwriters (including Mack David, Sammy Fain, Al Hoffman, and Jerry Livingston) to bring Carroll's magical world to life, often using his own verse in the bargain. Marking the first time all of Alice's original music has been available outside the film, this edition presents it in a seamlessly edited manner that both evokes the story's atmospherics and showcases its Carroll-inspired songcraft. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars It is what it appears to be......   May 5, 2008
This is the EXACT soundtrack to the old Disney movie, instrumental pieces mostly. If you know every word and subtle nuance of the movie like I do, you will not be dissappointed.

I needed this CD to play music during a birthday party that was themed in Alice in Wonderland. We even used the music to play musical chairs. It was just what was needed.

5 out of 5 stars My very favorite Disney Soundtrack.   February 21, 2008

The Alice In Wonderland Soundtrack is a wonderful Disney Soundtrack and my second favorite concept album for a lot of reasons. Yes Bambi was Walt's favorite, Mary Poppins is supercalifragilisticexpialidocious with it's Oscar songs, but the Alice Soundtrack just makes me feel good more than any other. This CD is fun, has some beautiful music, exciting scenes, classic stuff... It is hard to describe exactly why I like it so much. Perhaps it takes me away to another land better than any other CD. Even better than the awesome 2 CD Wizard of Oz Soundtrack. Also, Alice is the best of the Disney Concept albums. The music, sounds, songs, and story flow seamlessly from start to finish. I haven't even seen the movie in a really long time, and I listen to the CD at least once a month. It's great.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful music, in the disney style   April 30, 2001

Another fine job at Disney Soundtrack restoration by master restoration producer Randy Thornton. He has taken music recorded in the 1940's and cleaned it up quite well. The movie's style required music that jumped out at you in short bursts and then dissapeared again, so most songs are very short in the movie. Randy tried to restore these songs to the length that they were originally recorded. The songs have a habit of jumping in and out of the underscore. Unlike many of Randy's other projects you do hear bits of sound effects now and then but rarely, most of the original material to use for this CD was lost to time and was no longer in the archives. Seven writers composed the music for the film, including the "UN-Birthday" song which was written by the songwriters that were working on Cinderella at the time. Most of the songs were composeded by Bob Hilliard and Sammy Fain. Jerry Colonna, Ed Wynn, Vera Felton, Sterling Holloway, all sung in this movie along with many more. There is a great 15 page booklet with lyrics, great liner notes, and art including the always illusive concept art that Disney history buffs treasure. Quite a few novelty songs were created for this movie at Walt's request, and the movie featured 14 original songs, the most any Disney animated film had ever had. All total the CD lists 23 tracks and 1 hour of music. Overall a gem of Disney history and very fun to listen to. Very affordable too.
