5 out of 5 stars the reason why Ozma got back together   July 6, 2007
This is it. Ozma took a short break, but this music simply has to be heard by everyone. Ozma can't escape comparisons to Weezer, but if they would have come released an album first then everyone would be saying that Weezer sounds a lot like Ozma. Neither is stealing each other's sound, they just both happen to be from soCal and have similar fanbases. It doesn't matter.

If you have been searching for the raw essence that Weezer captured on their first two albums, don't buy the last 3 Weezer albums, buy the last 3 Ozma albums. I always hope that the next Weezer release will be my favorite, and I love them all for the first few listens, but they never stick with me as classic Weezer did. The sometimes stomach-turning glossiness of recent Weezer productions is what Ozma avoids, trading it in for a more live-show feel. The best thing about Ozma's music is that you can never predict what the next chord will be.

Now that my Weezer rant is over, just buy this album and play it loud. The catchiest song is the opener, "No One Needs to Know". Some other personal favorites are "Fight the Darkness", "Incarnation Blues", and "Underneath My Tree". Perfect summer recording. Plus Star Wick is hot.

3 out of 5 stars It just misses   June 25, 2007

Some things about the album are really surprising and some extremely disappointing. To start with, Ozma usually package their albums with PC extras, like demofs and videos. This CD has nothing. It really loses points for that! As well, it was a really cop out to re-record 2 songs from other albums that have no real place on the album. No One Needs To Know and Eponine do more harm than good. They completely destroy the flow of the record. I have actually deleted them from my mp3 player and the record is much smother.

For the songsc

I love Barriers. It is a great opening the album. The lyrics are kind of reflexive of the bandfs past, in my interpretation. Itfs a good song for the band. Great guitar.

Fight the darknessc well, I donft like this one so much. Musically and lyrically it is a step backwards. They could do soooooo much better than this! The song misses, big time. I like the drumming though.

Heartache is just amazing. The way the song begins is just breath taking. Itfs their best crafted song on the record, hands down. Again, great drumming, best on the album, but thatfs courtesy of the Rentals, who shine the most on this song. The Rentals actually did a lot work on this albumc check out the liner notes of the CD.

Incarnation Blues is another great one. Short and sweet. It reminds of Light Years Will Burn for their last release. Classic Ozma to me.

Lunchbreak, um, I just donft get it. I hated it at first, but it grew on me. There is a little bit of shadowing in the singing. gOne day I know you'll need to follow me (one day we'll go)h. I wish they did more of that. As a whole though, this is another song that just misses. I donft care for much of the lyrics and I find them a tad on the juvenile side. Ozma is capable of writing better lyrics. One needs only to look at STOTBL for examples.

Motorology 3:39 is a song I hated at first. This one grew on me and now itfs my favorite song on the album. I think they take an unconventional approach to the song, which pays off after numerous times of hearing it. I love the lyrics on this track. Lyricly, itfs a polar opposite of Lunchbreak.

I Wonder is ok, just ok. It sounds like a song I would expect to hear in a Wes Anderson movie. If youfve never seen a Wes Anderson movie, than I feel sad for you. Go out and rent one. I love the part that goes gyou can exist in a world without being a part of the world and somehow that's comforting when you're not where you want to beh.

Underneath My Tree is another song I didnft like at first, but has grown on me like a fungus. All around a great song, and should have closed the album. Unfortunately it doesnft.

Straight Flush is a mediocre end. I donft think the song would improve (itself or the album) if it were moved to another place on the album. There is not anything specific I donft like about the song. I just think it doesnft gel. It might have been better if this one hit the cutting room floor.

About the album as a whole, I really asked myself why does it sound so different than the other albums. Then I realized that the whole album lacks bass. There is week bass sound and no stand out bass lines, unlike every other Ozma album. Where is the bass?

I feel the album is more miss than hit. I canft always say why, just that it misses. They try many unconventional approaches to songs, which pays off in the long run, in that makes the album less boring and formulaic.@However, this doesnft always work and when it fails itfs abysmal. It feels like they too hard to things differently, gone against the grain of what the songs would be. 3 out of 5 for Ozma. Hope they aim higher on the next release.

5 out of 5 stars Great come back album.   June 13, 2007
For new and old fans of Ozma, this CD will keep you rockin'. Two of the 11 songs are newly recorded versions of older classics ("Eponine" and "No One Needs to Know"). The majority of the songs have up-tempo rhythm and lyrics that are a blast to jam out to. Some songs will jump out as Ozma style songs, but they do branch out a little (i.e Straight Flush). While their previous CD had lackluster sales due to poor marketing, this new album should do decent.

I highly recommend this CD to anyone who is interested in Ozma, or just looking for some real music with heart in it.

5 out of 5 stars Ozma return and they haven't missed a beat   May 17, 2007

As teenagers, Ozma recorded the perfect geek rock album in Rock and Roll Part Three. It grabbed the attention of Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo, and they gained a number of fans by opening for Weezer on a nationwide tour. Ozma followed up that album with two more excellent records, The Doubble Donkey Disc and Spending Time on the Borderline, but sadly, they broke up in 2004. To the delight of their fans, the power pop quintet reformed in 2006 with a new drummer. Does their first post-reunion album (named for the band's Southern California hometown) live up to the high expectations of those diehard fans? For me, the answer is a resounding yes.

Oddly, two songs, "No One Needs to Know" and "Eponine," are re-recorded versions of tracks from previous albums. This was due to pressure from management, who believed these songs would make ideal singles. They're both great songs, and the new versions sound tighter than ever, although "Eponine's" shortened outro is a disappointment. On the nine new songs, Ozma branch out their sound considerably from their earlier records, and it pretty much all works. Some of the new stuff is good, like the quirky pop rock of "Lunchbreak (Cobras Theme)." Some is great, like the beautiful acoustic ballad "I Wonder." Some is so amazing it makes me giddy, like "Heartache vs Heartbreak," the first Ozma song to feature shared male/female lead vocals. Other highlights include the incredibly catchy "Incarnation Blues" and the cathartic-sounding "Underneath My Tree." If you like anything Ozma have done in the past, or if you just like great power pop, buy this album now.
