Product Description
Warner Brothers Fred Claus (Blu-ray) Vince Vaughn is enormouslyenjoyable as the titular Fred Claus, disgruntled older brother of the better-known St. Nicholas himself, i.e., the North Poles very own Santa (Paul Giamatti). A garrulous hustler running from the emotional fallout of the ultimate sibling rivalry, poor Fred keeps trying to find happiness through one failed scheme after another, pushing away the people who care about him most. When brother Santa puts the squeeze on him to help out in the toy factory atop the world, Fred turns the place into one big, raucous party. Unfortunately, hes unaware that Santa and Mrs. Claus (Miranda Richardson) are under tight scrutiny from an oversight committee (represented by a calculating Kevin Spacey) and could be shut down. The film, directed by David Dobkin(Wedding Crashers), gleams and twinkles the way aholiday movie should, and has plenty of fun material for youngsters, including a wacky chase scene in which Fred goes on the run from a half-dozen, angry Salvation Army Santas. But Fred Claus is alsosupposed to appeal to hip adults with a taste forironic farce, and on that score the movie feels like a succession of Saturday Night Live skits morethan an organic whole. Still, Vaughn holds everything together with a smart, insightful performancethat looks deep into his characters torment--with more than a few laughs.

3 out of 5 stars Ho, Ho, Ho!   January 6, 2009
"Fred Claus" is a madcap comedy about Santa and the problems, and love, generated by his family. Fred (Vince Vaughn) is Santa's (Paul Giamatti) older, fast talking hustler brother who irritates everyone of whom he tries to take advantage. Santa's wife wants to protect him from Fred, but Santa tries to exercise tough love when he gives Fred a job. Fred's conduct plays into the hands of a vengeful efficiency expert who is scheming to shut Santa down, forever. Ultimately, Fred pitches in to save Christmas and help his friends besides.
This is a funny, clean, holiday movie. Ho, Ho, Ho!

3 out of 5 stars Your opinion of this movie rides on your opinion of Vince Vaughn   January 1, 2009

This movie has a lot going for it. The cast is great, with Paul Giamatti, Elizabeth Banks, Kathy Bates, Kevin Spacey and Rachel Weisz. Most of the movie is spent at the elaborate north pole set, which should be captivating to kids. There is even a touching, stereotypical tame Christmas plot.

But the key is, do you like Vince Vaughn. Vaughn is the star and plays Fred Claus, Santa's older, underachieving brother. Vaughn plays Fred as he has every other character (without the swearing or low brow humor.) He is a fast talking, wise cracking loser who gets a second chance. If you don't mind Vince Vaughn's schtick, then you'll enjoy this film.

3 out of 5 stars A Little More Than 3   December 31, 2008

This was a decent kid's Christmas film. For adults however, I don't think it offers much. The story of Santa's naughty older brother is a funny concept. Vince is very good at comedy and he does his best from one silly routine until the next. The movie falls a bit short though and I can't rank this one among my Christmas classics. There is a very fine crew of talented people involved with the film including Paul Giamatti as a frumpy and tired looking Santa. I think most kids will love this picture and most adults will just find it okay.

4 out of 5 stars A new entry in Christmas movies   December 29, 2008

Fred Claus is a fine Christmas film, that has enough magic to come
alive and be another entry of good christmas movies. Smart script, a big
enough budget, great looking elves / north pole and other essential christmas ingredients. Is it the best...well no...but its sure good enough to be added to the Christmas collection.
A Keeper.
