Product Description Universal Pictures Leatherheads [Blu-ray] Football always makes for a great movie, and the sport lends itself well to numerous themes and genres, from the inspirational (Rudy, Invincible), the dramatic (North Dallas Forty, Friday Night Lights), or the comedic (Necessary Roughness, The Longest Yard). Be they films that focus on the high school, college, or professional level, one theme shared among all these films, and the vast majority of football-centric films, for that matter, is that they are all set during the modern era of football, from the 1970s forward. Enter Leatherheads, a film that takes the tried-and-true football tale, but travels back in time to the early days of professional football where sweaters and leather helmets were the norm. Throw inplenty of laughs and a romantic twist, all of which make it somewhat of a novelty among its football brethren. It is a movie that's got enough spirit, charm, and romance to make it an acceptable datenight movie, too. Leatherheads is far from being the best football movie I've seen, but it puts plenty of points on the board for originality, fun, and another fine performance from George Clooney (The Perfect Storm).
Amazon.com Leatherheads is a sort of two-fisted homage, simultaneously celebrating the early, unstructured days of professional football and the screwball comedies of the 1930s and 40s. George Clooney stars as "Dodge" Connelly of the Duluth Bulldogs, a wily (if a bit long in the tooth) player whose team goes bankrupt. His solution is to lure a war hero and star of the college-football circuit, Carter "The Bullet" Rutherford (John Krasinski from the American version of The Office) to join the team and, through the sheer force of his celebrity, legitimize professional football. Little does Connelly know that Rutherford's war record is being scrutinized by reporter Lexie Littleton (Renee Zellweger) and what she uncovers may undermine the whole scheme. Leatherheads isn't seamless--at times the screwball flavor feels forced and Zellweger's performance is labored--but those few awkward elements only emphasize how zippy and fun the rest of the movie is. Clooney also directed and demonstrates some real flair with editing and letting the fringes of the story be as vital as the main plot. Krasinski, with his goofy handsomeness and a streak of Jimmy Stewart charm, shows real promise as a movie star. Though Leatherheads has plenty of broad slapstick (and most of it is pretty funny), the movie's real comic richness comes out in offhand gestures and sly revelations of character. All in all, it isn't Preston Sturges (director of classic comedies like The Lady Eve and The Palm Beach Story), but it's in his neighborhood, and that's a pretty wonderful neighborhood to be in. --Bret Fetzer

Great Fun! January 7, 2009 This movie is perfect for those who prefer films from the 40's genre. the chemistry between George Clooney and Renee Zellwegger is great, and John Krascinski has proven himself a very good actor. It's a fun film, a Christmas gift to my husband, and one we'll both enjoy watching over and over and over again.
Disc Related Problem January 7, 2009 Could not view the BRDVD on my Sony S300 or S500. I imagine I was unfortunate in receiving the 1 bad one in the lot of 1000. Ergo, my rating is N/A.
Too funny January 7, 2009 Leatherheads is all I expected. It was laugh out loud funny! We need more movies like this. I will watch it many more times.
Great romantic Comedy January 3, 2009 When I fist saw this movie I thought it was a great movie. For one it is a film not many people have tried to captcher the pre area of football which to me is interesting enough. Some other things I loved about the movie was the feel you got with the movie. George Clooney makes you feel like you're in that era with the camera shots the music the mood and everything about the movie. Yes there is a romance story in the movie but the comedy is great throughout the movie!
Leatherheads December 16, 2008 If all you have to look forward to is a cold night with nothing but a blanket to keep you warm and only half your brain in a full function mode, this is a good comedy to waste almost two hours watching. Set in the early days of pro football, Dodge Connelly (the George Clonney character) is an over the hill captain of a rag tag pro team. Renee Zellweger plays a tough sports reporter, a differnet role for her. But, then she always surprises me with the wide range of characters she plays. She's the girl in the middle between Dodge Connelly and college recruit star, Carter Rutherford (John Krasinski)with totally predictable results. Like I said, it is entertaining and worth a look see if the night is a total bust anyway. I liked this movie but then, you must keep in mind that I am also a fan of the Three Stooges.
