Not a bad action flick, not so good a sequel August 9, 2008 With a big bag of popcorn this is OK. As an extension of Heinlein's vision, it's not so good.
A new kind of Bug, and a psychic intelligence officer assumes command of a combat unit with predictable results. A little too much romance and a disgraced war hero push it right over the top. Good action, with no need for higher brain functions.
As a sequel, this story didn't require Heinlein's mileu, but could have worked in other sci-fi settings. It lacked the philosophical under-pinnings of the book and Verhoeven's over-subtle anti-military irony.
Good, second rate, action fun, without baggage.

Nice Try June 3, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
So i guess it made sense for the series to try and introduce a spy of sorts into the franchise but id didnt pan work out. The film is extremely dark at some points, not just in Emotional setting but Lighting. The director is former FX master Phil Tippit(Jurassic park, St1) and he does an ok job for a newbie but the fans wanted more of the first movie. More War, More Violence, More decapitations. Sure this opne has a few gory parts but nowhere nere the scall of the first one. ST2 also changes the face of the federation claiming "Officers just tell soldiers where to Die" Suggesting that officers order the deaths of others for thier own political and military gain. This in my opinion is a bad direction. The first one has plenty of dying but it also shows the true to life brotherhood of the soldeirs and thier dependance on the Commanding Officer for Guidence. This is how war really is. The first also had more than enough Political satire and Sadistic, darkside Comedy which the sequal lacks in large.
I give the film three stars instead of two because the acting is OK for a bunch of Unknowns but for the fact that the entire production budget was about $2 million and the rest came out of Tippits Pocket. If thats not passion i dony know what is. And to all the Dissapointed Fans out there, Sorry but the Third does not due much better.
