Whether you consider plants a source of terror or not will ultimately determine how you feel about the grisly horror movie The Ruins, but director Carter Smith and his cast and crew certainly give their all in bringing the chills of Scott Smith's novel to the big screen. Jena Malone (Saved) and Shawn Ashmore (the X-Men franchise) are the name actors in a pair of American couples down Mexico way who are ambushed by hostile Mayans and forced to the top of an ancient temple, where a monstrous and diabolically clever entity awaits them. Director Smith and his talented crew (which includes cinematographer Darius Khondji of Se7en fame and composer Graeme Revell) create a visually impressive spookshow but can't quite deliver genuine suspense (gore, however, is handled capably), and Scott Smith's script boils away much of the character development and mounting terror in his book, which also strands the likeable cast. The movie's monster, so alarming and imaginative in the original novel, is likely to provoke as many laughs as screams from filmgoers, especially when it reveals its unique talent. -- Paul Gaita

4 out of 5 stars Good horror movie. Keeps you interested.   January 4, 2009
"The Ruins" kept me sitting on the edge of my seat, and anticipating what would happen next. No other horror movie, except "The Descent" held my interest like this one. I must admit, I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it is. The hopelessness of the situation and ending ran along the same lines in both movies. If you don't think plants can be things of terror, this movie might change your mind. There are other horrors, as well, and they are very real. As with "The Descent", I didn't especially like the ending here, but the actors played their characters well. One of the best horror movies I've seen.

4 out of 5 stars True Horror!!!   December 23, 2008
What a horrible situation these characters are put in. This movie is truly a gem, extremely well done technically and also, very well acted (something rare in this genre). It allows you to suspend disbelief because of its raw, realistic script and narrative.
The "villain" is definitely interesting and makes you want to know more about it. The movie took the concept presented in the novel and made it credible.
And of course, the brutality of some scenes does make you cringe, but nothing is without a purpose; there are no jump scares here.
The only thing I would change is the very beggining (could have been skipped altogether, but I can see the studio saying: "We need a scary scene right here!") and the ending (I prefer the alternate ending to the theatrical one).
Other than that, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Give it a shot.

2 out of 5 stars INTERESTING AND SHOCKING, BUT ABRUPT ENDING SINKS IT! 2 1/2 STARS!   December 20, 2008

What could have been a pretty solid horror effort, ends up feeling rushed with an unsatisfying ending. The story starts with the usual meet the cast and put them in a stupid situation first act, but the second act which is the best part of the film is actually pretty good.

This film has some pretty graphic gore and they don't pull any punches! Some of this was laugh out loud funny as it's so over the top, I had to wonder who thinks of the stuff! :-D It's fairly well acted and the tension is there, but it has a rather abrupt ending and I felt it left a few questions unanswered. It's worth a look at 2 1/2 stars and delivers some of the goods!

2 out of 5 stars Read the book!   December 14, 2008
Having read Scott Smith's book, "The Ruins" at least three times and listening to the audio CD as well, I was very disappointed with the movie version. The movie was loosely based on his wonderful and highly entertaining novel. I implore anyone who only saw the movie to do yourself a huge favor and read the novel. There were some engaging moments in the movie but they were few and far between. Rarely have I seen a movie veer so far away from the main story line of a novel. Perhaps "The Ruins" should have been a TV mini-series instead so that there would be adequate time for much needed character development. May there NOT be a movie sequel. Sigh.

5 out of 5 stars well I liked it!   December 14, 2008

I thought this was one REALLY scary movie. Actually maybe not scary- more like disturbing.

Disturbing because the amount of blood was very high, and it just kept getting bloodier as the story went on.

These mysteriously EVIL weeds are the monster of the movie, so to speak. They are especially drawn to blood, so whenever one of the teens started bleeding either from a big fall or got cut or whatever, the weeds would sense this and slowly sneak forward and attack without the teens knowing about it.

I admit I thought it was stupid how the plants apparently had an ability to mimic the sounds the teens would make, or the sound of a phone ringing. I could have sworn the plants were giggling at one point. Very silly.

But the story that involved WHY the kids weren't allowed to leave this mysterious place covered with weeds kept my interest, and I was wondering why the people who wouldn't let the teens leave were camping out and waiting for them to die.

Well, now we know why- they didn't want the teenagers to leave and possibly risk spreading the weed (which is silly, because there was one scene that showed a bird flying by, and as you probably know, a bird can simply carry leaves and seeds somewhere else, effectively spreading the weed- but we'll ignore that little mistake from the writers).

Anyway, I loved the movie, and the scenes where the weeds were actually crawling INSIDE the people and moving around inside their stomachs and legs like snakes was disturbing to me. They looked like snakes moving around in peoples bodies! I felt so sorry for that one blonde-haired girl and all the stuff she had to put up with.

Recommended for horror lovers.
