Product Description Studio: Paramount Home Video Release Date: 08/19/2008 Rating: R
Amazon.com As lunkhead comedies go, Strange Wilderness never creates the necessary frisson to keep a viewer engaged by the film's endless parade of marijuana jokes, gross-out sight gags, and celebrations of rank stupidity. Which is too bad, because the cast would be ideal for a smarter version of a stupid movie, but they come off as largely wasted here. Steve Zahn (That Thing You Do) plays Peter Gaulke, heir to a wild animal television program called "Strange Wilderness," but too out of it to keep up his late father's congenial yet focused legacy. With the show's ratings plummeting (even at a 3 a.m. broadcast time), Peter attempts to rescue the series by traveling to Ecuador in search of Bigfoot. Accompanied by a crew of idiots (Allen Covert, Jonah Hill, Justin Long) and one comely lass (Ashley Scott of TV's Jericho), Peter heads into one obstacle after another: sharks, piranha, pygmies, Mexican border guards, a crazy tracker (Robert Patrick), and a nitrous high. After awhile, the lowbrow hijinks all run together and one feels a bit trapped, desperately awaiting final credits. But there are a couple of recurring comic ideas that salvage the movie somewhat, especially the use of stock footage of animals accompanied by Peter's absurd voiceovers. ("The shark can be found only in two places: the northern and southern hemispheres.") --Tom Keogh

A Flawed. but nonetheless funny movie. January 3, 2009 "Strange Wilderness" is a Happy Madison film (Adam Sandler & Co.) that I believe does what It reaches out to do for the most part, be a simple, funny, stoner, wilderness movie. It stars Steve Zahn and Allen Covert as the two Main Characters, and a Slew of the good ol' faces we see in most Happy Madison movies (Peter Dante, Jonah Hill, Blake Clark, etc..) Strange Wilderness is the show that Peter Gaulke(Zahn) inherits from his once heralded father who passed away some time ago, and ever since Pete took over the show went downhill. With the show on two weeks notice Strange Wilderness Foils a plan to capture the much sought after Big Foot while trying to beat a rival Animal Show team to the punch. "Strange Wilderness" delivers a handful of Low brow laughs, especially Jonah Hill's "Cooker" character. It is worthy of a buy if you're into the type of comedy that is usually delivered from these type of movies.
I would have rather I imagined what it could have been as opposed to what it was. November 21, 2008 Wow...
So Happy Madison, hot of the heels of the sleeper hit Grandma's Boy, puts out a new movie with most of the familiar faces from other Happy Madison productions (such as Allen Covert and Peter Dante) as well as Judd Apatow's go-to-guys Jonah Hill, Broken Lizard's Kevin Heffernan, and Justin Long who seems to be everywhere nowadays. The lead went to Steve Zahn, who's a decent actor, but was he the best choice for an R-rated comedy romp? I dunno...
The story centers around a group of guys who are determined to have their nature-based TV show go from being considered embarrassing to supreme, despite lacking any originality or direction in regards to nature shows. The group finds themselves on an adventure and usually falls victim to their own ineptitude.
Much like the TV show in the film, the movie itself tends to lack originality or direction. It features a lot of the elements found in other Happy Madison productions, including the dopey heroes, unethical villains, and slapstick comedy where everything seems to fall apart until the end. The most telling point was the end of the film, where the ending came at such an anti-climactic measure that by the time it was all said and done, it would leave you asking yourself "... was that it?"
Bottom line: There was too much talent in the film for it to have performed the way it did. Maybe another lead man could have injected a little more life into it (instead of a cast consisting primarily of supporting actors), but it was largely the weak premise and weaker delivery that robbed this movie of the energy these guys have had in other movies.
I can't recommend it to anyone.
If you liked GRANDMA'S BOY, You'll LOVE this movie!!! October 30, 2008 Laugh out loud FUNNY! Go for the ride into the WILDERNESS, you will have a blast!!! It sure beats the news on TV!
BEARS DERIVE THEIR NAME FROM A FOOTBALL TEAM IN CHICAGO October 28, 2008 I DONT WATCH MOVIES TO POINT OUT THEIR FAULTS, I WATCH MOVIES TO BE ENTERTAINED. THIS MOVIE WAS HALARIOUS. BEARS DERIVE THIER NAME FROM A FOOTBALL TEAM IN CHICAGO, MORE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KILLED IN WORLD WAR 1 AND 2 COMBINED THAN HAVE BEEN KILLED BY BEARS. COMON THIS IS HALARIOUS. STEVE ZAHN IS A GREAT ACTOR AND THROWING IN THE REST OF ADAM SANDLERS BUDDIES, MADE IT EVEN BETTER. THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT WONT THINK THIS IS FUNNY ARE IN THERE 30'S AND ABOVE. I REALLY LOVED THE SHARK SCENE WHERE THEY ADDED A STUPID LAUGH FOR THE SHARK AND PLAYED IT OVER ABOUT 5 TIMES. I WOULD ABSOLUTLEY RECCOMEND THIS FOR ANYBODY THAT LOVES COMEDY AND ADAM SANDLER MOVIES, IT WILL DEFINITLEY GO IN MY DVD FAVORITES.
Ouch October 9, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Don't waste your time with this movie. Rented it and it was horrible. I think watching my little brother's soccer game is more entertaining. I expected a lot more from the crew and cast. A sad disappointment.
