Amazon.com In 1943, a by-the-book captain (Dick Shawn) is put in charge of a decimated company with orders to capture a quaint Italian village. Upon arriving, the men find the opposing soldiers all too eager to surrender, but only after the local wine festival, a bacchanal that leaves both sides wasted. The troops are forced to work together to stage a mock battle to satisfy American and German forces that are close by. Neither cynical like The Americanization of Emily nor absurd like King of Hearts, this 1966 comedy directed by Blake Edwards (The Pink Panther) and scripted by William Peter Blatty (The Exorcist) is a carefree romp. Collateral pleasures include Edwards' signature stylish slapstick, Carroll O'Connor as a blustery general, James Coburn as the cool-under-fire Lieutenant Christian, Harry Morgan as an intelligence officer who gets lost in the village catacombs and goes mad, and the ravishingly beautiful Giovanna Ralli as the village Mayor's very pliant daughter. "War is hell," the DVD box proclaims, "and isn't it fun?" Not really, but that shouldn't mar your enjoyment of one of Edwards' lesser-known films that is ripe for rediscovery. --Donald Liebenson

Absolutely Hysterical December 31, 2008 Bought this my husband for Christmas. We watched it Christmas day including my 20 year old son. It was absolutely hysterical. This is a great movie to watch if you want to have a good laugh!
Did Somebody Order a Laugh Exorcist? October 21, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This one-joke movie about the Italian Army's intestinal fortitude in engaging the war is tough going particularly when you consider the film's nearly two hour running time. It's certainly watchable but doesn't deliver the chuckles one would expect. It's nothing more than an extended episode of "McHale's Navy" with less laughs. I'd say "Hogan's Heroes" but that show was repugnant. Lone saving graces are a charming, not to say voluptuous, Giovanna Ralli and an all too brief turn by Carroll O'Connor as a gruff general. Mildly shocking when you consider the involvement of director Blake Edwards and screenwriter William Peter Blatty ("The Exorcist").
Funny! September 25, 2008 I just saw this movie and it's hilarious. I laughed out loud several times. The characters are pretty goofy, and there are stereotypes all around -- clever but undisciplined GIs, bumbling Germans, and, uh, Italians, who are their own stereotype. It's just a funny, feel-good movie to spend a lazy afternoon on. Definitely one for the collection.
Superb Anamorphic transfer to DVD August 21, 2008 This 1966 comedy looks fantastic on this May 2008 DVD release of this classic comedy. The format is anamorphic widescreen, enhanced for 16x9 aspect ratio, large-screen TVs. The picture and sound are crystal clear--beautiful rich, natural colors, sharp and crisp picture quality--it probably did not look this good in the movie theaters. If you have a large-screen, high-definition TV/high-defintion DVD player with surround sound--you will not be disappointed. Highly recommended!
What Did You Do in the War, Daddy? August 4, 2008 This movie is a funny WW II spoof and unmistakably Blake Edwards. It has a female impersonator, water gags and all the elements usually found in his movies. Henry Mancini provides great music. Henry Morgan should have had a better character roll. I would rather not have military overtones in movies.
