Christian Science was founded in Boston in 1870 by Mary Baker Eddy, and has been described by some as a "cult for the cultured" because many of its members are well-educated and financially secure. Some well-known past and present members include John Ehrlichman and Bob Haldeman, former Senator Charles Percy, dancer Ginger Rogers, singer Doris Day, and movie star Joan Crawford. In the case of Christian Science, the "other inspired literature" used in their teaching is Mrs. Eddy's book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, that helps members to interpret, or rather re-interpret, the Bible. Mrs. Eddy's definition of Christ, for example, doesn't even include the name Jesus. Some Christian doctrines that are denied by Christian Science include the doctrine of the Trinity, the virgin birth of Christ, the deity and atoning death of Jesus, and the existence of Satan, evil, and Hell. Much of the teaching is works-oriented and deals with self-reform which appeals to man's intellect and pride.
On this program, you will see an emotional interview with a couple whose young son died as a result of their beliefs in the healing power of Christian Science. Other interviews will give you an inside look at how the organization operates and what they truly teach. Dr. Walter Martin also takes you to their headquarters in Boston and provides you with a close-up glimpse of Christian Science, the cult for the cultured.
