Product Description Based on Alex Haley's best-selling novel about his African ancestors Roots followed several generations in the lives of a slave family. The saga began with Kunta Kinte (LeVar Burton) a West African youth captured by slave raiders and shipped to America in the 1700s. The family's saga is depicted up until the Civil War where Kunte Kinte's grandson gained emancipation. Roots made its greatest impression on the ratings and widespread popularity it garnered. On average 130 million - almost half the country at the time - saw all or part of the series.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA Rating: NR UPC: 085391144854 Manufacturer No: 114485

Roots review June 22, 2008 This production brings this sad part of history to life superbly. I remembered it from 30 years ago when it screened on German television and have now shared it with my husband and our teenagers in New Zealand.
We appreciated the many details of the environment at the time and as it was a true family history it was very moving and unforgettable.
Roots June 2, 2008 I have always loved the movie, Roots. It was hard to watch when it first came out and it was even harder to watch now. I got this DVD for my son to watch because not a lot of Black history is taught at his school and he needed to see where we came from. He and his friends use the "n" word too much and I wanted him to understand how this word came to be and why it is unacceptable in everyday language.
This movie also was instrumental in giving me pride in my black heritage. Blacks were made to feel as though they were an "inferior" race of people and because of the "Roots" movie and the book author, Alex Haley, I know I have the right to be proud of who I am, and to appreciate our ancestors who shed blood for the freedom we now enjoy.
movie series great, but dvd quality needed May 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This was a great movie series with some "soul" and excellent characterization, and hated to see it end. But the dvd quality was poor in some areas, and had to fast forward and skip some scenes due to bad sectors on dvd.
Amazing April 7, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
First saw it as kid and it moved something in me to see how terrible my people were treated. And to see how strong they were to endure that but still stand strong in their faith. And for a family to keep their history going by feeding their kids that story is amazing. My family can only go back about for four maybe five generations. This another one of my must haves.
Roots April 6, 2008 WoW! I love this collection. It's clear and it's quality is amazing. I highly recommend Roots to all families.
