In the mid-'70s, Family was sort of the anti-All in the Family--dealing with the issues of the day, but far more sincerely and earnestly than Archie Bunker & tribe. In fact, the landmark series, which debuted in 1976 on ABC, quickly gained a following for its willingness to integrate controversy with a fairly typical upper-middle-class family. The Lawrences--headed by Sada Thompson as Kate and James Broderick (father of Matthew Broderick) as Doug--were close-knit but willing to face issues like infidelity, gay friends, alcoholism, divorce, and more--making it ground-breaking for primetime TV. The kids (divorcee Nancy, played in season 1 by Elayne Heilveil and replaced in season 2 by Meredith Baxter Birney; Willie, played by Gary Frank; and the heartbreakingly adorable Buddy, played by Kristy McNichol) knew they had mom and dad's support, even when the going got tough, and were there for each other when crises arose. And happily, the show's producers, which included Mike Nichols and Aaron Spelling, realized all this earnestness needed leavening with some humor. When Buddy is needling Willie for dance lessons so she can go to the Junior Jump with the babelicious Carl ("Hey, the Strawberry Shakes are playing!"), Willie balks. Then Buddy looks him square in the eye and says, "I need a personal triumph, Willie." She shoots, she scores. The show, which won Emmys for both Thompson and McNichol, boasts stellar writing and believable situations, and is still compulsive watchable years later. The boxed set includes all 28 episodes of the first two seasons. --A.T. Hurley

4 out of 5 stars So-so.....   September 28, 2008
Although I enjoyed watching the show. It was like I remembered it, the quality of some of the disks were not so good. They froze up and I had to skip certain parts of the DVD in order to get the DVD to move on.

5 out of 5 stars When is the next season coming out on DVD?   September 25, 2008

Family is one of the best shows to have ever been on TV. Why is it taking so long to get all the seasons out on DVD. I have watched the first season over and over and am ready for more. Please, please, please put out more seasons.

5 out of 5 stars Family Stands The Test Of Time   September 22, 2008

This is my all-time favorite series and the issues, writing and acting are as fresh and interesting as they were 30 years ago. I've laughed and cried with the Lawrence family and been glued to my TV for all the episodes on this box set. Come on, Sony! Give us the rest of the series. Episodes ahead deal with Willie's marriage, the Lawrence's adoption of Annie, Buddy's blossom into adulthood and much, much more.

If you don't have seasons one and two, buy them. You won't be disappointed! This show is like Chicken Soup for the Soul!

4 out of 5 stars reliving the 70s   September 21, 2008

This series stands up pretty well. I remember wanting to be like Kate Lawrence when I was in my 20s and find that I still would like to be Kate Lawrence. The first few episodes are somewhat uncomfortable but when you get into the rhythm of the show it is very gratifying. A couple of episodes dealing with death and loss actually made me cry. All in all, a nice return to the 70s.

5 out of 5 stars One of my very favorite shows   September 3, 2008

I so enjoyed watching "Family" when it was on TV back in the 70's. Now I get to watch it all over again, and it is a welcome addition to our DVD collection. "Family" is a breath of fresh air in this day and age of boring, watered down, and repetitive television shows. I just hope the rest of the show's seasons are also released on DVD soon. Thanks!
