Queen Latifah demonstrates her loose, easy charm in Last Holiday, a remake of the 1950 comedy with Alec Guinness. Though at first glance it's hard to imagine anyone less like Alec Guinness than Queen Latifah, they both communicate a world of inner thought with nothing more than a sly sideways glance. Georgia Byrd (Latifah), a department store employee, leads a life of frustrated desires--particularly for a bashful salesman from the outdoor furnishings department (LL Cool J, Deep Blue Sea). But when she learns she only has a few weeks left to live, Georgia gathers her money, quits her job, and flies to a swank European resort she's always dreamed of visiting. Naturally, her new carelessness with money and fearless candor lead everyone around her--including her senator (Giancarlo Esposito, Do The Right Thing) and her former boss (Timothy Hutton, Ordinary People)--to think she's a mover and shaker. Last Holiday unfolds the way you expect it to (dozens of movies and TV shows have similar plots), but Latifah and the capable cast keep it alive. Also featuring Alicia Witt (The Upside of Anger), Jane Adams (Happiness), and the ever-dependable Gerard Depardieu (Cyrano de Bergerac) as a passionate chef. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars A good message   November 9, 2008
I actually liked this movie, but agree with some that the direction could have been better. Tim Hutton's acting, as always was stellar. He's a very funny guy. Conceptually, the message is a good one...Perfect love casts out all fear. It encourages us to use our God given gifts and talents...and that it's only too late if you are dead. I would see it again.

4 out of 5 stars Cliched, by-the-book, and wonderful   October 28, 2008
You would have to be a real scrooge to not enjoy this movie. While it is everything you have already seen before, it has so much heart and warmth and humor that it scores a big touchdown. Latifah and company are all excellent here. Even if it's against your better judgement, you will be moved!

4 out of 5 stars My god   October 5, 2008

I paid nothing to see this movie as the theatre on my base has free admission... That being said, this movie was a waste of my money and my time. Maybe it's because I'm a guy and this movie wasn't aimed at me. Maybe it's because I like good movies, either way, don't waste your money on seeing this movie. Wait a couple years until they show it for free on TV or wait for a friend to buy it and mooch. ....Horrible movie Two hours of horrible even Apparently I cannot post until there are ten lines of text. So here we go, extra lines....what a waste of bandwidth.... I understand why they do this, but why ten lines? Why not nine or eleven. Truly an enigma.

1 out of 5 stars a life lesson   September 23, 2008

This was one of the best movies!! 6.0 rating is way to low. The concept was wonderful, the Queen was brilliant and the supporting actors were magnificent. All inter-weaved to tell a tale of living life to the fullest. If this movie doesn't make you want to get off your butt and take that hobby to the next level, tell that person you admire that you love them or see that place on earth you want to visit,.. then nothing will. Thank you Queen and LL for another great movie from you guys. You again didn't have to flash breasts & booty, curse constantly or do the "hollywood" thing to your movie to deliver an inspiring story, a life lesson, a blessing. God Bless You Both.

5 out of 5 stars Warm & likable, it will leave you with a smile   September 2, 2008
At first I resisted seeing this movie. I didn't think it would have anything new to offer. I was wrong! Surprisingly, this story offers charm and wonder in casual fashion as if it had always been there.

She travels to Prague to live out the last of her days and discovers a world she never knew existed. There is a lot of camp to the story, but instead of detracting, it simply serves to make you laugh. The characters are funny, the supporting role by Gerard Depardieu was marvelous. He struck just the right amount of humor and heart. Timothy Hutton is great as the frustrated senator and Alica Witt is beautiful as always. Who wouldn't want to spend a month with her high in the snowy mountains next to a warm fire with a bottle of champagne?

The scenery is awe inspiring and spectacular and will make you want to book your next vacation to Czechoslovakia -- and maybe stay there for the rest of your life.
