Product Description A nursing home resident remembers two special friendships at the cafe in a small town near Birmingham. Genre: Feature Film-Drama Rating: UN Release Date: 6-JUN-2006 Media Type: DVD
Amazon.com essential video Kathy Bates stars as an unhappy wife trying to get her husband's attention in this amusing and moving 1991 screen adaptation of Fannie Flagg's novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe. After befriending a lonely old woman (Jessica Tandy), Bates hears the story of a lifelong friendship between two other women (Mary Stuary Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker, seen in flashback) who once ran a cafe in town against many personal odds. The tale inspires Bates to take further command over her life, and there director Jon Avnet (Up Close and Personal), in his first feature, has fun with the film. Bates develops a real attitude toward her thickheaded spouse at home and some uppity girls in a parking lot, but dignity is generally the key to Avnet's approach with the story's crucial relationships. Tandy is a joy and clearly loves the element of mystery attached to her character, and Masterson and Parker are excellent in the historical sequences. --Tom Keogh

Fried Green Tomatoes August 24, 2008 Fried Green Tomatoes had a little bit of everything: drama, comedy, mystery and not to mention three great actressess, Jessica Tandy, Kathy Bates and Mary-Louise Parker.
Fried Green Tomatoes DVD Movie August 13, 2008 I was pleased with the amount of time the movie was received in. The movie was in excellent condition.
This DVD is NOT the Original Theatrical Release of the Film July 5, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I loved "Fried Green Tomatoes" at the theater and the old VHS video version (which is the only version on which you can see the original theatrical release), but unfortunately, both DVD versions insert extra scenes which ruin some of the seemless transitions between flashbacks and present-time which were the hallmark of "Fried Green Tomatoes". The extra scenes aren't even particularly good, and this DVD provides no original version without them. This criticism is true for both the Widescreen Collector's Edition and the Anniversary Edition. I'm deeply disappointed, and hoping Universal will one day release the original theatrical version of the film on DVD. What a shame it would be for the theatrical version of "Fried Green Tomatoes" to one day disappear.
Excellent Film! June 23, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I won't go into a synopsis on the film as that is done in other reviews. But I just have to say that is one of my favorite films. It is about true friendships, loyalty, and empowerment. There are some sad moments in the film, but overall it is very uplifting. I have seen it numerous times and never get tired of it. I recently visited Juliette, GA where the film was actually shot, which prompted me to watch the movie again when I got home. The town still looks pretty much like it did in the movie, including the Whistle Stop Cafe! You can eat at the cafe, and some of the other buildings in the town have been turned into gift shops now. If you are a fan of this film and ever in Georgia, stopping there is a must.
The secret's in the sauce! June 22, 2008 One of my all time favorite movies. Even though there are parts of it that are sad, there are many uplifting moments. I'm from Alabama and I think they did a pretty good job overall of giving a glimpse into life in the Depression era South. If you don't understand the meaning of loyalty, then you need to watch this movie. There's something for everyone here! Oh yeah, the book is great to, although a little short. It even includes some recipes for those famous fried green tomatoes! YUM!!
