Product Description The unlikely story of ralph walker a ninth grader who outran everyone expectations except his own in his bold quest for trying to win the 1954 boston marathon. Studio: Sony Pictures Home Ent Release Date: 04/24/2007 Starring: Campbell Scott Jennifer Tilly Run time: 98 minutes Rating: Pg13 Director: Michael Mcgowan
Amazon.com A sweet and silly story that becomes increasingly poignant as the minutes tick by, Saint Ralph is the fictional tale of a wayward 9th grader, Ralph (Adam Butcher), who is secretly living on his own while his widowed, hospitalized mother remains immersed in a coma. Frequently in trouble with Father Fitzpatrick (Gordon Pinsent), the principal of his all-boys, Catholic school, Ralph is considered something of a joke among peers until he decides to pull off the miracle that could save his mother, i.e., winning the Boston Marathon. Coached by a younger priest and former runner, Father Hibbert (Campbell Scott), whose cynicism has been lifted by the boy's pure hope, Ralph applies himself to his unlikely mission, fending off naysayers and getting help along a very challenging path from sundry allies and friends. A touching movie featuring a startlingly knowing performance from the young lead. Jennifer Tilly and Tamara Hope co-star, and the film was written and directed by Michael McGowan (My Dog Vincent). --Tom Keogh

A Film to watch for people of all faiths (heartwarmer) November 17, 2008 This movie is about a young 14 year old boy from the 1950's who lost both of his parents and his mother is in a deep coma. A priest tells him only a MIRACLE will save his mother and wake him from the coma. The only miracle he knows about is winning the Boston Marathon. Everyone says it is impossible and not to waste his time and Father Fitzpatrick threatens to expel him if he runs. The young Father Hibbert ignores Father Fitzpatrick and helps Ralph train for the marathon. Defying the incredible odds he decides to run the Boston Marathon and actually does very well. His friend (I forgot his name) tries to persuade him not to run and tells him his mom will never come out of the coma. This just further strengthens his resolve to RUN (also he ends up getting in a fight with his friend).
I am not going to tell you if he actually wins or not but the end of the movie is very touching when his mom actually opens her eyes for a second and says Ralph's name with his medal in her hand.
After watching this movie I believe anything is possible through faith and just believing you can accomplish something. The movie will really open your eyes to faith and hope. This is one of the "better" movies out there and beats all of the other problematic movies. You might even want to become a better person after watching the movie. So go and see it! I highly recommend.
The Best Movie In The World! September 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have seen thousands of movies and this is the best movie ever made. This movie will inspire you and touch your spirit. I love putting this movie on the background when I am working. God I love this movie. If you only see one movie in your life this is it!!!
Perfect Little Gem of a Movie June 10, 2008 The foundation of this movie is the formulaic underdog story, but formula aside, this is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time, and much of the credit goes to Adam Butcher and Campbell Scott. Adam Butcher is a marvel, and it's worth watching the movie just see him on the screen inhabiting the character of Ralph Walker. This is not a movie that relies on special effects, marketing hype and overpaid superstars. It's a charming and entertaining character dramedy that will leave you reaching for that box of kleenex.
And it's not a preachy film. Although it may resonate more with Catholics, the "faith" theme in this movie transcends specific denominations and is really more about personal faith and transformation.
A Plucky Fourteen -Year-Old in the Boston Marathon June 5, 2008 Saint Ralph, a plucky fourteen-year-old Canadian kid, has lost his father and grandparents, his mother's in a coma, he's living in the family home on his own, is attending a Catholic school run by brothers, and decides that he will perform a miracle in order to pull his mother out of her coma. The miracle is that he will run in and win the Boston Marathon. Father Fitzpatrick, the school's inflexible headmaster, right out of stock casting, is determined to foil Ralph until the very end. Luckily a priest-teacher at the school trains the boy in marathon techniques. Much of the movie shows the boy training. Tireless but tiresome for viewers. The movie has a great deal of religiosity and piety in it which may be off-putting for some, but it also has a measure of humor. Ralph seems to be always falling down in the movie. It has more than its share of cliches and stereotypes, and an old-fashioned quality, but because it is set in 1954, contemporary viewers may forgive such lapses. Heartwarming, uplifting, at times a tearjerker, the movie somehow holds our interest, and we can't help rooting for Ralph. Santa Claus is somehow blended with God in the boy's mind, but only a Scrooge would condemn the movie outright. A Hidden Gem May 14, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I just discovered Saint Ralph a couple of month ago as I was walking through the independent film section of the video story. I knew nothing of it, had no expectations and was wonderfully surprised. It is now, to date, my favorite movie. It is bound to be (if it isn't already) one of those great cult classics.
