Product Description
One of Walt Disney's most precious film classics, SO DEAR TO MY HEART (Meu Querido Carneirinho) combines live action and animation to tell the heartwarming story of a young boy with big dreams and an even bigger imagination! Jeremiah is the determined country boy who adopts a rejected and mischievous black lamb named Danny. While drawing a picture of Danny in his scrapbook, Jeremiah daydreams of winning a blue ribbon at the County Fair. Then, from the pages of the scrapbook, Danny and other animal pictures magically come to life and convince Jeremiah to enter the real-life Danny -- a pet without a pedigree -- into the upcoming County Fair! But the road to the fair is filled with tough challenges for Jeremiah, who must learn the importance of dedication, love, and repsonsibility. Featuring the Academy Award(R)-nominated song "Lavender Blue" (performed by Burl Ives), and a host of enjoyable songs for children and adults, SO DEAR TO MY HEART is high-spirited, sentimental fun for everyone! *This is the Brazilian import and is region 1 compatible. It has words written in portuguese on the back.

5 out of 5 stars A Disney Film to Get.   November 23, 2008

This is a wonderful film, i never got a chance to see it when i was younger i don't know why( i saw alot of disney Titles). but i did a couple days ago, when i bought this title on vhs. it was a kind and loving story with the two child actors from Song of the South. i'll probably end up buy it on dvd. i have no idea what is so offensive about it, i saw nothing bad in it. but a great story with great songs by:Burl Ives. but Disney as usual is being a butt about releasing anything that is good. so what else is new. this is a story about a boy wanting a horse, but end up settling for lamb instead and the lessons that he learns along with his grandma and sweet hearted uncle.

Highly Recommended Disney Title To Get.
For all ages.

This film is available only through the Disney Movie Club. It's a great
film and truly one of the classics made by Walt Disney.

5 out of 5 stars The Region 4 import "Mey Querido Carneirnho" is perfect for USA viewers!   July 17, 2008

I just received the Brazilian Region 4 import DVD of "So Dear To My Heart" (which bears the title "Meu Querido Carneirnho" on the packaging.) This is an official Disney DVD that is 100% USA DVD-player compatible. The text on the sleeve and disc graphics are in Portugeuse, but the disc content is 100% English.

As soon as you pop the disc in (and I mean literally--before any Disney logo or the DVD menu appears) you get a splash screen to choose the language. Choose English and all subsequent menus are in English. There are Portugese, Spanish and English subtitles, or you can turn of subtitles entirely. Film and all extras audio is in English. The transfer is beautiful, sharp, excellent color. Among the extras is a slideshow of Mary Blair concept art and promotional lobby cards, one-sheets, etc.

American viewers who have been waiting for an official Region 1 release (or have been thinking about joining the Disney Movie Club just to get this title) don't hesitate to order the Region 4 / Brazilian import, it is exactly what you are looking for!

5 out of 5 stars US and Canadian residents: There is a DVD is compatible with your DVD player! Get it now!   June 8, 2008

This film is available on DVD for those in the US and Canada!

If you've anxiously awaited a North American DVD release of this film only to be disappointed that Disney has delayed it indefinitely, this is the alternative. This is the official Region 4 Disney DVD that has been released in Brazil, yet is 100% compatible with Region 1 NTSC systems of the US and Canada.

Only the cover and disc artwork are in Portuguese, but when you play the disc, the first thing that you'll see is a selection of languages. Just choose "English" and from there you'll be able to enjoy the movie and wonderful special features exactly as if it was a US release.

Special Features include:

Rare Footage - About a half an hour of outtakes and unused footage.

Stills Gallery - Movie photos, posters, and production art.

Facts Gallery - Interesting trivia.

BTW, although the price might be attractive, stay away from the Chinese DVD release. I don't think it is even an official Disney disc. The picture quality is poor compared to the remastered Disney DVD and it has no special features.

INFO ADDED 7/17/08:

An official Region 1 disc for the USA and Canada was released as a Disney Movie Club exclusive on July 1, 2008 and is only available through the club. Unfortunately, the disc does not contain the 25 minutes of unused footage segment found on this South American DVD. If you're a film buff and enjoy really good special features, the official South American release is the better deal.

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss it   May 12, 2007

The second movie made by Walt Disney that employed live actors, SO DEAR TO MY HEART was released in 1949 with the same two child stars used in SONG OF THE SOUTH. SO DEAR was reportedly one of Walt Disney's favorites because it reminded him of his childhood home in Missouri.

SO DEAR TO MY HEART was shown on television during the first season of Walt Disney's television program in 1954, then again in 1957, and was released theatrically in the early 1960s. It was shown on television once more in 1992. The movie was released on VHS, but never in the United States on DVD. No less an authority than Leonard Maltin, the movie critic and Disney historian, has said that the Disney Company has no plans to release it on DVD in this country because it is politically incorrect, in spite of his efforts to convince them otherwise.

An Asian import DVD is easily found for sale on eBay and other sites, but is of poor video quality, is clearly not restored, and contains a menu with Chinese characters. Burl Ives' name is also misspelled on the case insert. It was released in the United Kingdom, but if found, won't play on standard DVD players sold in the United States. Finally, SO DEAR TO MY HEART has been released in Brazil in a format that will play on North American DVD players. It is almost impossible to find in the US so grab this copy. The audio and video quality of the restoration by Disney is excellent and there is a superb 20 minute extra that shows how the film was made.

The child stars, Bobby Driscoll and Luana Patten, were the first two contract actors signed by Walt Disney. Luana Patten was again seen in Disney's JOHNNY TREMAINE (1957) and FOLLOW ME BOYS (1966). She also had numerous guest appearances on television. Luana Patten died in 1996 at age 57.

Bobby Driscoll starred in TREASURE ISLAND (1950) and was the voice of Peter Pan (1953). He won an Academy Award for Best Juvenile Actor (1949) for the RKO release THE WINDOW and for SO DEAR TO MY HEART. After he left Disney he continued acting, mostly on television, but his life took a tragic turn as a teenager when he began using drugs. He died destitute at age 31 in 1968 in New York City. Initially unrecognized, he was buried in Potter's Field. Though he was identified by fingerprints over a year later, he remains there still.

At the time of this review, there is only one copy remaining from this vendor. Buy it!
