Writer/director/editor/special-effects-supervisor Robert Rodriguez (Spy Kids, Desperado) continues to storm the movie world with The Adventures of SharkBoy and LavaGirl in 3-D. A young boy named Max (Cayden Boyd) finds the real world crashing into his dreams: His parents fight, bullies harrass him at school, and his teacher advises him to get a grip on reality. But Max's faith in his fantasies is so strong that his superheroic creations SharkBoy (Taylor Lautner) and LavaGirl (Taylor Dooley) crash into Max's classroom and take him off to rescue the fantastic planet he dreamed up. Towards the end, SharkBoy and LavaGirl crumbles with clumsy story gaps and bland moral advice, but most of the movie explodes with visual invention. A clockwork villain with electrical limbs commands an army of extension-cord snakes; SharkBoy uses his claws to engrave a diagram of the solar system into a chalkboard; LavaGirl's burning feet melt an ice bridge as she runs across it. It's disappointing that Rodriguez's storytelling flounders, but sections of deliciously fluid movie-making make The Adventures of SharkBoy and LavaGirl in 3-D worth seeing nonetheless. Also featuring David Arquette (Eight Legged Freaks), Kristin Davis (Sex in the City), and George Lopez (Real Women Have Curves). --Bret Fetzer

1 out of 5 stars Oh Lord... Save us all   January 4, 2009
Alright so maybe I'm being a little over dramatic.
I suppose if your a kid, I guess you'll like this.. or maybe not.

Alright so whats the bad about this movie? Lets start with the script. Long story short: Max goes into a dream world and has to return things to normal. He is aided by his 2 Dream Hero/Heroine (You guessed it) "Shark Boy and Lava Girl" I could run down how they became like this, but frankly, you really wont care. This would seem like a good script for a Children's movie, to bad it's weighed down by horrible Special Effects, and even worse dialogue.
Let me demonstrate how terrible this dialogue is: If I went to a rendition of "New York!" made by tone-deaf kids, I would still consider it to be "Relief."
There is a point when Max throws out a cheesy one liner, which just happens to be "I woulden't dream of it!" This induced such a tremendously loud groan, my neighbors thought I had suffered a heart attack.

The cast is either way to over done, or just doesen't know what they're doing. Now i know this is supposed to be part comedy (Atleast.. lets hope so) but even the most melodramatic parts feel so cheesy and forced, that it does a pretty awful job of breaking up the pace, or even making you care for that matter.

So thats the movie in a nut shell. Hopefully your kids will like it (If you made the horrible descision to rent, or even worse, buy this movie)
As for Shark boy and Lava Girl? I doubt we will be seeing them anywhere for a long, LONG time.

3 out of 5 stars Campy movie   January 3, 2009
Having seen this movie countless times with my children, I find there is always something new. It is very campy but written at 2 levels, for both adults and kids to enjoy. Parts of the movie are very difficult to follow, but Lavagirl and Sharkboy are appealing in their strangeness and the relationships of the main character Max to characters in his 'real life' vs. 'dream world' interesting. There are obviously very contrived moments, especially at the end, when the whole movie comes together in a neat package, but it is a kid's movie after all. I wouldn't recommend this be a movie for everyone, but for kid's who enjoy fantasy movies like Never Ending Story, this might be another one to add to the DVD library.

4 out of 5 stars So dream a better dream; then work to make it real.   October 9, 2008

2005's children flick Sharkboy and Lavagirl is the creative and lovable tale of a young boy Max(Cayden Boyd) who's having a little trouble fitting in at school thanks to his dream journal and possibly imaginary friends Sharkboy(Taylor Lautner) and Lavagirl(Taylor Dooley).

When Sharkboy and Lavagirl come to ask for Max's help to save the planet he created and their home, planet drool will Max be able to help? Especially since his dream journal has been stolen by the class bully Linus(Jacob Davich).

The dvd does not come with the 3d glasses, atleast mine didn't, but you can watch it in 2d as well which is just as enjoyable. (And doesn't leave you with a headache!)

All the child actors are enjoyable and the plot is fun, filled with plays on words and different takes on famous children's rhymes and analogies.

George Lopez is entertaining as the intimidating Mr. Electric, an evil villain on planet drool and Max's school teacher back home on planet earth.

I also really enjoyed the making of feature that tells us a lot about Robert Rodriguez's processes in creating and really bringing Sharkboy and Lavagirl to life. It's admirable to see someone really helping to cultivate their children's creative side, especially when there is such opportunity.

As much as I didn't want to, I can't say I didn't enjoy it.... more then once.

This is a great movie the one thing you should be aware of is that it does not come with the 3D glasses and you have to have specific glasses for the movie which they do give you the phone number to order them but my son was disappointed when the movie came and then had wait to see it in 3d and was a hassell for me as well.

5 out of 5 stars My kids love this movie!   August 19, 2008
Every time they watch it they are absolutely glued to the screen, as if they are seeing it for the first time! They are 5 and 7 years old. I must say, its got some really funny lines in it! I find myself stopping what Im doing to watch it too!
