Amazon.com
The producers of the Superman movies took a shot at revitalizing the myth of Santa Claus with this 1985 feature. Unfortunately, the results were much less compelling than the flagship Superman feature, despite a script by one of the latter's key writers (David Newman) and a story structure that is essentially a carbon copy of the Man of Steel's movie. The first half of Santa Claus: The Movie is a ponderous origins tale, in which we learn that Santa was actually a woodcutter saved from certain death by elves and taken to the North Pole to begin life as the chimney-dropping hero of children everywhere. The second half involves a world-class villain (John Lithgow) who recruits an outcast elf (Dudley Moore) in a scheme to sabotage old St. Nick. While it aims to become a Christmas classic in the hearts and minds of generations to come, the film never really engages an audience, partially because Santa himself is merely a supporting player in the drama. Jeannot Szwarc (Supergirl, Jaws II) directs with a disabling lack of vision, and the special effects are terrible for such an expensive production. Sorry, but it's coals in the stocking for this flick. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars It's not XMAS until you have watched this TALE!   January 5, 2009

My title may seem like over the top drama - and you may just get a little of that in this movie, but I swear, If you haven't seen this film or you've heard its childish or silly, I implore you. Give it a chance. Form your OWN opinion. Whether your 7 or 37, it will move you, make you smile, and wish Christmas could last for weeks rather than a day. From the team that brought you Superman this film had a lot of love put into it. 50 million bucks to be exact! They could have copped out and used 1980s trick photography or what was availble for CGI (not much) but the spent the good money and time to train REAL deer from (Norway?) I think?
PLEASE - give this a chance. I know you will love it as much as I do. Its a christmas story that's warm and charming. Best way to sum it up. Warm and charming. You wont find a man here or on any other planet who portrays the childhood myth and stories about Santa Claus like David Huddleston. His smile and charisma, look and style are perfect. This guy is a Santa a child would trust and run to sit on unlike those "mall santas" - we all know them. Dudley Moore and John Lithgow's performances enhance the film. Just a heart warming tale about Christmas. No sex, no BS - just a good family Christmas film. Now if you'll excuse me I have to go order the widescreen version...WATCH IT - I promise you and the fam will love it year after year. I sure do

5 out of 5 stars Has been a family tradition for over 20 years!   January 2, 2009

My family growing up watched this every Christmas season and it became a tradition, because the story is great, it's funny, and now I have a family and bought this about 5 years ago...not seeing it for probably 10 years...I was so excited to have found it, (since you can't find it in a movie store, but always looked every year) and bought it for my own children...it is traditional, and sparks the spirit of Christmas, and the true meaning, which is about love, and giving. LOVE IT! My kids love it too (ages 5 and 4).

5 out of 5 stars More unhelpfuls?   December 31, 2008

Kind of like Frosty, good old Santa always scared the living *&%# out of me. A fat guy drops down your chimney and brings you presents. Yeah right.
Not in the hood I grew up in. Santa dropped down the chimney with an empty sack and took off with all the presents your parents bought you.
When I was eight Santa kicked in the garage door and stole our snow blower.
The cops caught him pushing it up the road at two in the morning.
Santa got his fat, bearded &*( thrown in jail that night.

Anyway........now playing........GHETTO CLAUS.

You better watch out
You better not scream
Better not call 911
I be tellin' you why
Ghetto Claus is coming to town
He's making a list
Of which houses to rob
He be findin' out Who be home or not
Ghetto Claus is coming to town
He breaks in when you be sleepin'
He hopes you ain't awake
He knows if you've got ADT.
So set the alarm for goodness sake!
O! You better watch out!
You better not scream
Better have a few pit bulls
I be tellin' you why
Ghetto Claus is coming to town
Ghetto Claus is coming to town
