One of the best "so bad they're good" films ever made.... September 10, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I remember watching this on cable once, and I couldn't stop laughing. Of course, I wasn't supposed to laugh, I was supposed to be in awe of Evel Knievel and his magical, mystical, manly powers. As a kid, I liked Evel and his crazy stunts, but this is just a bloated ego trip for the daredevil. It's one of the worst films ever made, but it's also one of the funniest. You know you're in for a good time when Evel sneaks into the orphanage at night to give presents to the children, and a boy throws away his crutches to be nearer to Evel! Evel does a miracle! God only knows how Gene Kelly (as Evel's mechanic!) got involved in this (a lot of old Hollywood stars ended up acting in very substandard garbage in the late stages of their career when the studio system fell apart, and Kelly was one of the most unlucky, having to do this film and Xanadu). It is somewhat sad to see the great Gene Kelly in such a bad movie, and give such an uncomfortable performance, even though there's a scene where Gene gets committed (!) by the bad guys, and he's pretty convincing in that scene. Maybe he was going crazy by being in such a bad movie. Knievel himself has absolutely NO charisma on screen, and his acting is so incredibly wooden. He couldn't even play himself! Leslie Nielsen is hilarious as the "bad guy", but this was before he was supposed to be hilarious (Leslie ended up going into comedy with Airplane a few years later, and rejuvinated his career). It is also not surprising that none other than Irwin Allen, the "master of disaster", had a hand in this film. A lot of Allen's crew worked on it, and some of the cast (Nielsen and Red Buttons!) were in Allen's Poseidon Adventure. This is funnier than Allen's atrocity The Swarm (which had its moments of unintentional laughs but was overlong and excruciatingly boring. Viva Knievel moves along at a decent pace). And let's not forget the theme song, praising Knievel!
I usually don't recommend "so bad they're good" films, but when I read this was on DVD, I had to write about it. One of the most ironic things here is that Warner Brothers gave this film a damn fine transfer. The picture looks incredible. The only extra is a trailer (which is damn funny). Unfortunately, the film is one of the most hilarious stinkers ever made. See it, then immediately get stoned and/or drunk afterwards.
RIP Robert Craig "Evel" Knievel, Jr. December 1, 2007

RIP Evel, there will never be another daredevil quite like you...
Good 70's Flick August 14, 2007 This is one of those films that is so bad it's good. Evel Knievel stars as himself in a war against drugs and corruption. On his trek to rid the world of this evil he drags Lauren Hutton and Gene Kelly along the way. Some of the reviewers, calling this the worst film of the 70's, are obviously taking the film way too seriously.
To enjoy Viva Knievel, leave your brain at the door, and start up your engines!
Oh my god. April 3, 2007 Based on the Netflix description, I assumed this would be a Leslie Nielsen slapstick comedy. It wasn't. Man, the 70s were a complete waste, weren't they?
They should cut this film up and splice the pieces together with the pieces of "My Dinner with Andre". It'd improve both of them, and frankly, I can't think of any other reason for either film to exist.
Evel became the motorcycle John Wayne July 1, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have read most of the reviews on this movie, and agree with many, as I have to respect people's point of view. However, I love this movie. When it first came out I was in (or almost in) high school, and was also a movie lover (still am).
This film hearkens back to the "good ole days" of film, where the hero saves the day. Evel is like a modern day John Wayne who rides his cycle (instead of a horse) through places in order to save the day.
Okay...do not expect Gone with the Wind, but if you want some action and some good old fashion fun, with a hero you can cheer for...this is the movie! Viva Knieval!
