Product Description This Emmy Award-winning powerful adaptation of John Jakes' best-seller tells the story of the turbulent events and emotions that ignited the Civil War. In the tradition of Gone With The Wind this glorious epic focuses on the lives of two families who are geographically and ideologically placed on opposite sides of the war - The North and The South. The saga follows the families through their changing fortunes at home and the harsh realities of the battlefields until the South surrenders and the families are reunited in friendship. In the final installment the story of the two families continues through Post-Civil War Reconstruction into pioneer Indian territories.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA UPC: 012569423121 Manufacturer No: 4231

Fantastic except for book three September 30, 2008 Book one and two are fantastic. This series gives you the clearest vision of the reality of the Civil war yet produced. Sadly, book three is an absolute disaster. I can't stress this enough. It is totally unwatchable if you enjoyed books one and two. It's not only bad, but it demeans the first two books by insulting the intelligence of the viewer. It clearly was shot for profit and nothing else. Hats off to Patrick Swayze for opting out. I have given the 3 volume set 5 stars only because of the excellence of books one and two. Buy this set and burn book three. Literally!
2 great leading men round out great story and production September 28, 2008 What the heck happened to James Read?!! Him and Swayze are fantastic on screen together, perfectly fitting their roles as George Hazard and Ory Main. IT really is a great mini-series, probably best one made, and while great production, plot, ensemble of actors etc, it is the main story of Ory and George that holds it together and give it charisma of big budget film week after week. One of a kind mini-series, at least the first two, featuring two charismatic leads in their prime, who along with rest of the cast, got to show their stuff acting out material that had strong ring of truth about it. Lots of other good points and actors etc in mini-series, it had a movie magic in it, especially first series and also pity Reid didn't get anymore epic roles.
A horrifying history September 27, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This moving but horrifying story of two families during the American Civil War brings home the reality of what political conflict can do to ordinary families. The sons of two wealthy families meet as cadets at WestPoint Military Academy where they are training to be officers. Orry Main is a true son of the South, raised on a large plantation which owns slaves, while George Hazzard is the son of the owner of an iron works. The young men form an instant and abiding friendship which grows stronger through the years, despite their cultural differences. The first part of the trilogy centres on on the characters from both the North and the South while the second part focuses on the Civil War and on the terrble results of war in a country divided. The third part, and my least favourite, shows the consequences of war and its appalling after effects on a nation and its people, with racial prejudice and hatred causing the formation of the Ku Klux Klan, a truly evil society which fomented bitterness and brutality in the South. The cast of actors was fascinating as it starred faces well known from movies and TV, all of whom fitted their roles perfectly. I feel that I would probably have enjoyed viewing this series better in the 80's when it was made as the dialogue now seems stiff and out of date but I still enjoyed it for the history lesson and the beauty of the costuming and settings.
North and South September 24, 2008 Enjoyed the video but the story was left unfinished. Book 3 (in the DVD Heaven and Hell) only had 1 DVD as compared to Books 1 and 2 which had 2 DVD's each and so the story was never concluded. If you read the book version of Heaven and Hell the story did have a conclusion. I don't know if their is a missing DVD or the TV series just didn't finish the story. It is most unsatisfying.
Great movie but the end is cut by bloody murder September 8, 2008 NORTH AND SOUTH : I enjoyed the movie a lot but the CD number 5 which is the last one ends by a bloody murder of one of the main character and previously other good characters. We understand that the CD does not reproduce the real end of the movie so it is extremely sad and disappointing to visualize this brutal end to finish the movie which was not reproduce to us in its integrality. This is very aggrevating considering the price paid.
