Amazon.com The "Magnum Farce" of Sledge Hammer aims at deserving targets and scores a bull's eye every time. Thanks to DVD, one of the funniest, most unconventional sitcoms of the 1980s has been gloriously revived, with an abundance of bonus features that fans are going to love. This is sweet revenge given the show's original ABC time-slot, buried under Miami Vice and Dallas on Friday nights, but creator-producer Alan Spencer's savvy spoof of Dirty Harry had critical praise in its favor when it premiered (with a senseless laugh track, mercifully deleted here) on September 23, 1986. Played to perfection by David Rasche and introduced with an infectious Danny Elfman theme song, Sledge is a trigger-happy male chauvinist pig (er, cop) in mismatched clothes who thinks The Deer Hunter is a comedy, sleeps with his .44 Magnum (called simply "Gun"), drives a bullet-riddled sedan with an "I ? Violence" bumper sticker, and somehow manages to always catch his quarry. "I'm a nihilist, not a stylist" he says (in the hilarious episode "Sledgepoo"), and that puts him at reckless odds with his lovely, karate-kicking partner Dori (played with flawless aplomb by former soap-star Anne-Marie Martin) and the vocally volcanic Capt. Trunk (Harrison Page, a slow-burn master and vital ingredient to the show's excellent casting). Partly inspired by Get Smart!, Spencer and a host of talented writers and directors dished up consistent laughs and daring anarchy, challenging broadcast standards with topnotch spoofs of hit movies (in episodes titled "Witless," "Jagged Sledge," "The Color of Hammer," etc.) while familiar guest stars like John Vernon, Brion James, Clint Howard, Michael De Barres, and Mary Woronov raised the comedy quotient even higher. After a deliberately outrageous, go-for-broke season finale it's a miracle that the low-rated Sledge Hammer! was renewed for a second season, but Anchor Bay's DVDs do justice to the show's enduring quality, and Spencer's commentaries (on four episodes) rank among the funniest ever recorded (one of them during an earthquake, no less). All in all, this is one of the most delightful DVD surprises of 2004, with more fun to come in season 2. --Jeff Shannon
Description In the fall of 1986, an unsuspecting TV nation met a new kind of comedy hero who made Rambo look like Pee Wee Herman. David Rasche starred as the trigger-happy lawman whose hatred of criminal scum and yogurt eatin' creeps was matched only by his love of excessive force and a .44 Magnum. Over the next two seasons, this hilariously deranged lampoon of DIRTY HARRY and plenty of other targets became one of the most notorious series in television history and launched a rabid cult of fans that grows to this day. This is SLEDGE HAMMER! The complete first season of SLEDGE HAMMER! is now newly re-mastered (including removal of the laugh track) and loaded with an arsenal of exclusive extras that features uncensored footage, all-new interviews with stars David Rasche, Harrison Page and Anne-Marie Martin, audio commentaries and more, all given the "Hammer" seal of approval by Series Creator & Executive Producer Alan Spencer.

A Great Show Of The 80's Like No Other June 21, 2008 I like a few of us will always remember the 80's most fondly growing up to some of these shows. Sledge Hammer came at the time of shows like Miami Vice and 21 Jump Street and while these shows were good they were for me to serious and dramatic unlike the SLEDGE. The producers made him a mix of Dirty Harry and The punisher mixed but an a very funny way the episodes are in no way dramatic or serious. That is probably the most strong reason I love this show so much if anyone has seen either the naked gun series or movies this show was just as great as they were it sadly was canceled after only two seasons so thats all we're going to get which again makes me sad.The show had three prime characters you have Sledge Hammer(David Rasche) the serious cop out to protect the people of L.A no matter who he has to shoot,Dori(Anne-Marie Martin)Sledge's more level headed partner making sure that Sledge doesn't get to out of control even though thats almost impossible, and Captain Trunk(Harrison Page)Their captain who has to both manage to try to keep Sledge's mayhem to a minimum and to smooth things over with the brass and press when Sledge's over exuberance causes the usual destruction and mayhem. The season sets both one and two come in full screen and stereo sound you get some commentaries from the creator of Sledge Hammer and from all three of the main characters. So if anyone is looking for a great 80's show get the season one and two sets you will be greatly surprised and delighted.
EXCELLENT June 8, 2008 GREAT SHOWS, ENJOYED EVERY MINUTE OF IT. RECOMMEND IT TO EVERYONE. BEATS THE CRAP OUT OF CABLE RIP OFFS. I DON'T HAVE CABLE. I JUST ORDER MY FAVRITE SHOWS AND WATCHED THEM COMERCIAL FREE.
Even better than I remembered April 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Enough has been said about the hilarious misadventures of Hammer. What impressed me was the absolutely top-notch quality of the DVDs, their packaging and the fast service from Amazon. Small money well spent.100% recommended.
Hammer/Doreau 2008! April 1, 2008 Whatta team. Whatta show. Whatta shame -- that it was only 2 seasons. It's as funny as I remember it 20 yrs ago! Kudos to the writers for pushing the silliness envelope. Kudos to the actors for playing it to the hilt.
BTW, I believe the earthquake during the Season 1 commentary was the December 22, 2003 San Simeon quake (measured 6.6).

Sledge Hammer! Yesssss! TV like it used to be -- and should be. Hilarious, irreverent and thoroughly entertaining! No sacred cow is safe! Righteous violence and mayhem, with tongue in cheek! Shot down after two brief seasons ...
Today's 2008 on-the-air American TV remains a vast vacuous entertainment wasteland. It needs more shows like Sledge Hammer, Max Headroom, Briscoe County Jr., Firefly, and Legend. Fortunately, you can find Sledge Hammer and most of these other shows on DVD -- if you look hard enough. With one exception: the few episodes of the brilliant TV series Legend really need to be made available for us viewers -- a matter that really must be addressed ... NOW!
