Product Description Burt Lancaster gives one of the most memorable performances of his career... ...in the critically-acclaimed ROCKET GIBRALTAR. Lancaster stars as Levi Rockwell a writer professor comic and lover of the sea who is about to turn 77. In celebration of the event Levi's four children and eight grandchildren return to his home on the idyllic shores of Saggaponack New York. Featured as one of the eight Rockwell grandchildren is Macaulay Culkin star of Home Alone and My Girl. The Rockwell clan is a close-knit family who share a warm relationship with Levi. But what begins as a joyful day marking a milestone in a man's life turns into a surprisingly ironic and moving event as the grandchildren honor Levi's most cherished wish. A provocative film that crosses generations and is similar in spirit to The Big Chill Susan Granger of WMCA Radio called ROCKET GIBRALTAR "A total 10. Not since On Golden Pond has there been such a loving film."System Requirements:Running Time: 99 Min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA Rating: PG UPC: 043396101456 Manufacturer No: 10145

A little gem... September 5, 2008 What makes this story so engaging is that much of it is told from the viewpoint of the children who have come with their parents to attend their grandfather's 77th birthday party. From listening to stories that Grandpa tells, the kids get the idea that he doesn't want to be buried (no worms!) when he dies, but would prefer to go out in a blaze with a Viking funeral. So when he dies unexpectedly and the kids discover it before any one else does, they set out to fulfill his wishes. I've never really been a fan of Macaulay Culkin who plays the primary role here but this may be one of his best performances as a child actor. He brings all the sweetness and innocent child-like wisdom to the part that makes this story really work on so many levels. This is definitely a movie you'll want to watch more than once. You are guaranteed to laugh as well as cry and think seriously about the quality and meaning of your life -- and how you want to go out at the end. I don't know about you, but I'm all for the Viking funeral myself.
One of Burt's best May 31, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
An older Burt Lancaster, in one of his last movies, gives a performance that shows why we like him so much. A very young Macaulay Culkin has never been cuter or more loveable than in this film. This is a movie that brings home the meaning of "family gathering", and will give the viewer an equal share of laughter and some sadness. Don't look for the rockets, there aren't any.

This is a film I watch when I'm in the mood for a poignant, feel-good movie. Macauly Culkin was marvelous, and it's one of my favorite Burt Lancaster movies. The topic of death isn't always easy to weave into a movie plot, but this one has a twist that makes the viewers ponder about how they would want to go out of this world.
Bad Worms April 22, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Inspired by the reviewer that wondered why more people don't review this wonderful film - I decided to do so, to help spread the word.
Very few films I've seen in my lifetime can create goosebumps with just a thought, but Rocket Gibraltar is one of them. The entire film seems like a far-away dream about a family you may have had in another lifetime. I first saw this film in high school, and I remember the entire class yawning when it first started, but quite a few of us were captivated by the end.
It's a film that, if watched in the right setting and with the right attitude, will stick with you for a lifetime. To this day, I still want to go out exactly as Levi (Lancaster) does at the end.
The film gets a 5 out of 5 from me, but I had to knock off a star on my overall rating, due to the fact that the DVD is full-frame instead of it's OAR of widescreen.

This is one of the most heartwarming and delightful movies I have ever seen.It is funny in parts, sad in parts, but Hollywood at its very best. However, keep some Kleenex handy during the final scene because your eyes will well up with tears. A truly great movie for children and adults alike.
