Amazon.com Let's face it: a movie in which Louise Fletcher eats a bullfrog can't be all that bad. Indeed, Tobe Hooper's remake of the 1953 classic Invaders from Mars is a total hoot, remaining loyal to the original while serving up a kaleidoscopic orgy of fang-toothed beasties, dazzling pyrotechnics, and enough wretched dialogue to choke its enthusiastic cast. If anything, Hooper's too enamored of the original, and with amateur actor Hunter Carson (Paris, Texas) as the boy-who-cried-Martian, he can't sustain the original's eerily paranoid atmosphere. This big-budget Invaders compensates with campy humor (especially from evil schoolmarm Fletcher) and cool special effects by Star Wars innovator John Dykstra. Carson's real-life mom (Karen Black) plays the school nurse who believes the boy's warning of invasion, and Jimmy Hunt--who played the kid in the original--brings everything full circle as a Martian-possessed policeman. Watch the original, then enjoy this less effective but equally entertaining remake. --Jeff Shannon

A complete disaster! June 4, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Invaders from Mars is probably the worst b movie I have ever seen. I used to think this film was a little cool but jeez I was 8 years old when I first watched this. I caught this sci-fi turkey on t.v. awhile back and this movie is garbage from start to finish. The peformances are even worse, I recommend you don't see this film, you'll thank me later.
One of those March 20, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is one of those films that some people absolutely love, but I think most are ultimately disappointed with. A mostly tongue in cheek movie with very few scares, this one pales when compared to the original. Simply put, the story is of a boy who sees a Martian spaceship land not far from his home, yet no one will believe him and soon people start acting strangely, including his parents. A star for the great Karen Black appearing in the film, she does her best. This movie is for people who think "Explorers" was a great science fiction movie. It is mostly silly stuff and worth a rental at best, but no a purchase.
Classic! February 6, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love this movie! It is a classic sci-fy. It is a re-make of the movie from the 50's and is really well done. The extra footage is interesting and they show how everything was created for the film. The only disappointment is that they changed some scenes from the VHS version when they digitally remastered it. They also left some really good scenes out. But the digital quality is amazing. I think it would be best to have this movie in both VHS and DVD.
Terrible! August 15, 2006 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Tobe Hooper had a number of screen successes and then directed this??? What was he thinking? The movie alternates between kitschy-camp and parody. If this film is supposed to be a send-up of the original, it failed miserably. Conversely, if this was supposed to be a hip, insider's sci-fi flick, it seems so very self-conscious and phony. At least "Mars Attacks!" never took itself seriously. A marvelous cast (Timothy Bottoms, Louise Fletcher, Larraine Newman, to name a few) is completely wasted in what undoubtedly will become a Worst Movie of All Time award recipient.
