Amazon.com Sometimes a movie works despite all its faults. Outrageous Fortune has a flimsy, formulaic script, so-so production values, and an odd combination of stars, but somehow it's engaging and fun. Shelley Long and Bette Midler play two struggling actresses--one a hoity-toity priss and the other a brassy slob--who learn they've been sleeping with the same guy (Peter Coyote) when he gets blown up in a terrorist assault and they confront each other in the morgue. When they discover that he's still alive, the bickering pair track him down, traipsing across the U.S. in high heels, pursued all the way by government agents, using their dubious acting talents to get them out of tough situations. The absurd plot keeps things moving and director Arthur Hiller (Silver Streak, The Out of Towners) gets cheerful performances out of everyone, particularly the strong supporting cast--including Robert Prosky (Broadcast News, Mrs. Doubtfire) as a pompous acting teacher, comedian George Carlin as a burnt-out would-be Indian, and the underused John Schuck (M*A*S*H, McCabe & Mrs. Miller) as a long-suffering agent. Contrived, cliche-ridden, but just absurd enough to entertain. --Bret Fetzer

Hilarious November 18, 2008 what do you expect when you mix Middler with Long? great great funny story, about where love could lead you sometimes :) great commedy
Outrageous Fortune...... March 24, 2008 Bette Midler and Shelly Long in some of the most hillarious work of there careers. This is a long time favorite of mine. I would recommend this to any one who appreciates humor. It is perfect for curling up on the couch with a bowl of popcorn. I would give this movie four stars. It has Bette and Shelly all over it.
Bette Midler at her best November 13, 2007 Bette Midler and Shelley Long from Cheers are wacky and crazy in a movie about spies and biological warfare. A great movie for adults. Scary climax!
Not your ordinary "chick flick" October 10, 2007 Outrageous Fortune is outrageously funny ... really fine acting all the way around ... Shelly Long and Bette Midler made a terrific team and played off each other extremely well ... loved George Carlin, his best film role [for me, since this is about my opinion]! To see this film is to see women as they actually are when it comes to men, but done with humor.
Love this movie September 11, 2007 This is one of my favorite movies and honestly I don't know why Long and Midler didn't do more movies together. (Maybe they didn't get a long on the set?) Anyway, I thought the women were hilarious and I loved how they ladies incorporated their acting and dancing skills to get them from point A to point B and how it all turns out to save the day. When I was a teenager, I used to watch this movie over and over. Weird I know.
