If you're looking for a deep, intelligently romantic movie with complex characters and a richly rewarding plot, don't bother with Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love. On the other hand, if you're feeling sexy and in the mood for a lush, seductive, and visually stunning film set in 16th-century India, this one will please you like the best foreplay you've ever experienced. Or it will relax you like a full treatment at a pampering spa--either way, you're gonna feel pretty fantastic. Okay, okay... maybe we're getting a little carried away, but there's no denying that director Mira Nair (best known for her acclaimed film Salaam Bombay!) has crafted a sumptuous film for the eyes if not the head. Its melodramatic plot is involving enough to elevate the movie high above soft-core adult fare, so you won't feel guilty after watching it.

Kama Sutra is the story of a young woman named Maya (the stunning Indira Varma) who has always been lower on the social scale than her well-born friend Tara (Sarita Choudhury), and has always lived in Tara's shadow, wearing her used clothes and being made to feel inferior. When Tara is betrothed to the handsome King Raj Singh (Naveen Andrews, from The English Patient), Tara sneaks into the king's tent on the eve of the wedding and seduces him. Later, after being trained to master the Kama Sutra's many "lessons of love," Maya will be the king's courtesan, and emotions will run high between the former best friends. But the plot is of secondary importance here (a fact that resulted in many mixed reviews), and so Kama Sutra works best as a colorful and irresistibly sexy story that is worth seeing just for the startling beauty of the film and its cast. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars "Could It Be Anything But Maya" ~ An Exotic Tale Of Love, Lust And Obsession   July 29, 2008

Released in '97 the exotic, sensual and visually alluring `Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love' is an intoxicating story detailing the intense, complex intermingling sensations of romance, sexual attraction and obsession as played out in a royal family in 16th century India.

I began my viewing of `Kama Sutra' with no personal knowledge or expectations concerning this film. What unfolded was indeed a pleasant surprise. The Indian landscape, architecture and costumes, the mesmerizing soundtrack and the captivating storyline are everything an audience could ask for. While you may not recognize the names of any of the cast, possibly with the exception of Naveem Andrews, the acting is excellent.

While the production receives high marks in every category the ultimate success or failure of this film rests solely on the shoulders of its star Indira Varma in the role of the lovelorn courtesan. Indira brings the story alive both with her stunning beauty as well as her thoughtful and passionate performance.

As one should surmise from the films title there is strong sexual content so be forewarned. Let me just say that the sex sequences are done beautifully and tastefully.

5 out of 5 stars The Only Thing   July 29, 2008
The only thing missing from this movie, was the smell of India. The movie is great in cinematography. The colors, sounds, people, place are exotic and beautiful. This is not a bollywood movie, thankfully.

4 out of 5 stars A sultry treat   June 6, 2008
this movie is enjoyable for it's scenery of India, explanation of custom, and sexual storyline. Some detractors are the acting at times is sub par but the movie never slows...

5 out of 5 stars The Colours   June 3, 2008
I Liked how this film was done. The colours involved. If you take a look at the credits, you'll see a lot of WOMEN involved. Naveen Andrews (now on the TVseries, "LOST") had a good role as a,'once great king, now an insect sucking opium poppy.'(like that line...). The variety of women shown (young, 'medium,' old, etc) was another visual I noticed. The soundtrack (which I own) is also good.

I love this movie for so many reasons I cannot list them. I saw the movie years ago and the feelings, costumes, music, scenery, story line and beauty were breath taking. As a romantic I became totally enthralled in the movie's content and it transported me to days of splendor and love. The lessons shown were difficult to accept, however the depth of the content offered redemption. Watching the heroess learn detachment after so many traumas in the her life experience was exhilarating. I recommended this movie for all women who are searching for creative ways to handle life with dignity and self respect.
