5 out of 5 stars A must-read, especially if you're a parent.   December 13, 2008
This book was required reading for one of my MBA courses, and I'm glad it was. I'm a voracious reader, and this is the best, most useful book I've ever read - ever. The insights Friedman gives about various topics are thought-provoking. I'm also a big proponent of education; and I'm a critic of our secondary education in this country. Friedman addresses education extensively in this book, and what he says (it's all true)should scare the hell out of you. If you are a parent or a teacher, this should be considered essential reading. You owe it to your kids.

3 out of 5 stars Globalization is just a new word for international trade   November 20, 2008
Friedman opines generally on how the world is flat, which is a general statement that most US readers can digest after reading the book. Yes, the advent of communication technology has accelerated the global reach of businesses around the world. However, just because businesses have offices in other countries does not make them automatically global. US business leaders must understand that technology gives reach, but not necessarily competence. The concept of culture is still key. Just because globally dispersed colleagues may all utilize Microsoft Windows does not mean that they all have the same global mindset. Friedman does present valid information, but again it is mainly from the US perspective of looking at the world through a Western lens, and not taking into account the vast majority of the world that still conduct business offline and within its own cultural context.

4 out of 5 stars The Speed of Irrelevance   October 31, 2008
By the time you've heard Thomas Friedman say the World is Flat, we will need a new metaphor. His expansion of the typical economic description of products produced and assembled in countless countries is delivered with the enthusiasm of a teenager who just discovered sex. Friedman's personal exploration of modernization around the world is fascinating but by now, everyone always knows about it. Granted this is not a brand new book and it's insights are usefull for understanding the current paradigm but it's time might already have passed. The economic roller coaster presented to us on the daily news is warping business as we know it. The world is no longer flat but if you have been living on a desert island for the past five years and suddenly wanted to go into business then you might want to know how we got this point.

1 out of 5 stars not what I wanted   October 14, 2008

I thought the book was a hard cover - when I received it and it wasn't, I wrote to the person who sent it, asking how I could return it, because I needed a hard cover book to replace one for a friend - I received no response back. So I'm stuck with the wrong book.
