explaining an opaque society August 13, 2008 While Japan peacefully modernised after World War 2, a feeling persisted that its society still remained relatively opaque and mysterious. Perhaps to shed some light, this book was written in the early 70s. The author seemed to be a sociologist or anthropologist, by the way the book is written.
It explains the typical family structure, included aspects of an extended household like the daughter in law. A comparison is made with Indian family structures. There is also a look at the company and how it interacts with the employee's private life. Often, an employee's family effectively becomes a subunit of the company, by implicit constraints on who the family socialises with.
The education system is described as levelling differences between social classes. Graduates of the same university or university level can often acquire the same social status, regardless of their families' origin. This is seen as a favourable aspect of the system, and perhaps it is, being based on a meritocracy. Though the book also is quite frank about the hierarchies present within the broader society.
